Can't say that we'll really miss this one. Front-wheel drive and V8s rarely make for a very compelling driving experience, and although the Impala SS made the best of its odd setup it never really caught on.
Is this a sign that GM is starting to cull its lineup of unnecessary or slow selling V8 models in the name of improved fleet-wide fuel economy? Possibly.
Or maybe its opening up some room for the introduction of the Chevrolet Camaro SS sedan?
Should the Pontiac G8 Become the Camaro SS Sedan?

Please, just no on the Camaro sedan naming. Name a Chevy badged G8 something, anything different. I don't care if it's called the Bel Air or Chevelle, just not Camaro. It will dilute the Camaro branding that is just coming back now.

It never caught on? Maybe not in Califonia (shocking!) but I see them all the time. The car is being cut because of fuel economy and they cannot justify making the 5.3L V8 now that the Lacrosse Super is gone.

They should kill the current Impala line, period. Either give the G8 sedan to Chevy as the next Impalla, or make a new sedan somehow vastly differentiated from the Malibu, but otherwise the 'Bu is big enough to fill the mid-size and full-size slots just fine.
And seriously, stop with the Camaro sedan thing. The overwhelming response to that post clearly demonstrated why that name is the Worst Idea Ever. Its really starting to get old that Edmunds is insisting upon an idea that 99.99999999999% of their readership hates.

What were the sales figures for this thing throughout its existence?

Meh, will not be missed.

The Impala SS was a slow seller to begin with. Not even the Police force considered as good alternative to the VICKI. R.I.P

I like my 2006 SS. Have 108,000 miles on it and have had no problems. Sure would like to see the G8 as a Chevy!

I hope they don't call the G8-as-a-Chevy a Camaro. (Dodge screwed up a similar situation with the Charger.) What is wrong with the Impala name? It just needs to hop onto the Zeta-platform, get the Chevy family styling (see the Malibu) and we're all set! I don't think anything else needs to change.

Like I said on my post about the "Camaro SS Sedan." They need to transform the G8 into the next Impala, complete with a V8 SS version. The Malibu is doing well enough for it to handle the FWD midsized business. The last good Impala, of course, was the 1994-1996 version. Granted, this generation of Impala SS does pretty well considering it is underpinned by the ancient W-body platform but like was already said, a V8 car such as this needs to be RWD.
@ iskch:
The Impala 9C1 (or is it 9C3?) was never made with the V8, only the 3.9 liter V6. I'm not sure of Chevy's reasoning behind this but I always thought a V8 option for the police car would be an interesting choice.

GM should make the next gen Impala based on the G8 or modified Camaro chassis, keeping 4 doors but refining the interior.
Camaro and only Camaro should keep its unique name, as that's apparently a huge issue with enthusiasts.

With the killing off of the Impala SS, I would guess the G8 is heading over to Chevy to fill that spot. The G8 becomes the new Impala, and the current Impala becomes Impala Classic for fleet sales until it's fazed out. That would be just about brilliant in recent Chevy tradition. The biggest drawback? "Impala" V6 looses a couple MPGs, but the quality trade-off would make it worth while for the consumer. If that's their plan, then I say Kudos! Imagine ... Impala SS "RS" (GXP). Besides, Chevy is going to need competition for the new Taurus and Taurus SHO coming out soon since the Taurus is larger than the Malibu.

They couldn't give the V8 Impalas away in TX. I personally liked the way it looked, but very few others seemed to care one way or another.
Makes a great used car buy, though. A friend had a rental V8 and got close to 30 mpg cruising at 80 mph to Nebraska.
The question I would have for any potential Impala buyer (V8 or otherwise) is why would you buy a new "rental car" when the same model year rental car return is so much cheaper? IMHO, fleet sales have killed the new car Impala value situation.
I know rental car companies need newer cars to rent out, but somehow the domestics must find a way to preserve the value of their new vehicles (Impala/Taurus) while still meeting that need.
I don't have the answer to that one. Impala is a great used car value, however, just not a new car value.

That's easy. Keep the old model around just to sell to rental car companies, like Chevrolet did with the Malibu "Classic". It doesn't hurt the resale quite as much as giving away the current model, and rental places still have something for people to drive.
