Cadillac CTS Forced to Do Stunts in Shanghai

cadillacv-seriescarsgonuts.jpg

Cadillac officially launched its V-Series line in China this week. John Heinricy was there to run a fast lap in the Cadillac CTS-V on the the Shanghai F1 circuit.

But, apparently, Cadillac decided that alone wouldn't be enough to impress Chinese buyers, as the company hired stunt drivers to do all sorts of wow-worthy acrobatics in the regular CTS sedans (Editor's note: No, these are not CTS-Vs as originally reported) on hand for the launch. Spiderman even made an appearance (3rd thumbnail). Why Cadillac couldn't spare a few more V-Series cars for these tricks, we'll never know, but then maybe we just answered our own question.

It's a shame Cadillac didn't get any high-quality video of the, um, stunts. However, a spectator at V-Day, as the event was called, did shoot video, evidently from his seat way up in the stands. Then, he set it to a delightful soundtrack. Watch the magic after the jump.

Is this for real?

Unless the Chinese CTS-V is different from the N. American one with respect to the front end, those are regular CTSs, and not CTS-Vs.

If only I could be that talented.

i rarely comment but ....

GM deserves to fail if they are so incompetent to promote something like this by at least shooting some decent video.

EPIC FAIL

OMG those stunts like jumping under the car is super dangerous! Good thing they don't value human lives in China, just get another stunt dude if things go wrong.

Oh ya go go Spiderman! Woooooooo!

@zc1: You are undoubtedly right. Those are most assuredly regular CTS sedans -- I got a little sloppy there. I'll run a correction now. --ER

I think the soundtrack is appropriate for ushering (pun intended) in the CTS into China. YEAH!!! :o)

Sweet driving, too!

While the stunts are cool, this promotion screams of desperation.

Spider-man? Seriously?

walking_dead, If you're going to use a promotional stunt in another culture to determine that GM should fail, you had your mind made up beforehand.

Maybe you just wanted to use an overdone Internet term like "epic fail".

I thought it was interesting. When the guy climbed underneath the car, that was a bit too much.

You know, maybe the people assembled there wanted to see Spiderman, and GM just gave them the type of show the audience wanted to see. For all their failings, as far as I've heard, GM do pretty good in China, so I dobut (well, I'd like to dobut) that they wouldn't be so stupid as to put on a show and not give the people what they wanted to see.

Doing business abroad is never a straightforward/logical deal.

The driving was awesome. I whish I had the skill to pull that sh!t off.

When are we going to get an edit function for our comments? :)

@billt9

It seems the person climbed under the car wasn't Chinese...

Anyway, it feels like they hire some professional stunters team. Finding so many people at one time that can drive a car side way could be hard...

msdaisy, apparently you think Chinese tastes are exactly the same as yours. Or more likely, give the tone of all your posts, you're just looking for whatever reason you can make up to dislike GM. Get over it.

"msdaisy, apparently you think Chinese tastes are exactly the same as yours. Or more likely, give the tone of all your posts, you're just looking for whatever reason you can make up to dislike GM. Get over it."

How do you know I'm not Chinese?

Since you think that any opinion that is unfavorable towards GM is blasphemous, I apologize if I hurt your feelings.

It might be a foreign concept to you, but here in America people are free to express their opinions without fear of persecution.

Would you care to explain why you disagree with my assessment or are you just here to make personal attacks?

I know it may be a lot to ask of you, but could you put a little more intellectual effort into your posts?

"Is this for real?"

Yeah, no kidding! This performance is insane!

I'm not sure how successful this marketing campaign will be in China, but it's definately something to watch.

Msdaisy,

I don't know if you're Chinese or not, but dismissing a form of entertainment because it isn't what you consider cool doesn't make it desperate. We can't know for sure how it was received, but given GM's resounding success in the Chinese market, I'd say it is fairly safe to assume they know how to market to Chinese tastes.

Speaking of personal attacks, when did I say any opinion that is unfavorable of GM is "blasphemy"? I consider putting false words into one's mouth one of the worst forms of personal attacks.

I never gave any impression that you weren't free to express your opinions, but I'm also free to express mine. You seem to be the one having trouble with that. Debates are a two way street here. Your intense overreaction and ridiculous condescension are really not something I want to encourage further, so I'll stop the discussion here. I'll just restate my position that GM knows the Chinese market, and spiderman impersonations are enough to amuse countless tourists on Hollywood boulevard, so I'm going to assume this promotion went over just fine. I'll let you have the last word, which I have no doubt will be enraged and hurt. Have fun with that.

"dismissing a form of entertainment because it isn't what you consider cool doesn't make it desperate."

Well why didn't you say so sooner instead of attacking me?! I consider Spider-Man cool. I consider the car stunts cool. Using Spider-Man to promote Cadillac is, in my opinion, desperate especially since they have nothing in common. To make a rough analogy, I'm sure if Spider-Man was promoting enlistment in the armed forces you'd have no reservations about considering that desperate on the Army's fault. Of course you're welcome to disagree.

"Speaking of personal attacks, when did I say any opinion that is unfavorable of GM is "blasphemy"?"

Oh please. You dismissed my opinion simply based on your not liking the "tone of [my] posts" towards GM and that I should "get over it".

"I never gave any impression that you weren't free to express your opinions"

That's a whole lot of backpedaling there my friend. Do you even remember your original post?

"but I'm also free to express mine [opinion]. You seem to be the one having trouble with that. Debates are a two way street here."

When did I give you the impression that you can't rebut? You know, I did ask you "to explain why you disagree with my assessment (of this promotion)". Maybe you skipped that part in your haste to respond.

"I consider putting false words into one's mouth one of the worst forms of personal attacks."

I find the irony quite amusing haha.

"spiderman impersonations are enough to amuse countless tourists on Hollywood boulevard, so I'm going to assume this promotion went over just fine."

I think I'll quote you on this one: "apparently you think Chinese tastes are exactly the same as yours".

"I'll let you have the last word"

I'll be sad to see you go. Your brilliant mind will be missed :(

"Have fun with that."

I am having fun! Aren't you?

And people wonder why GM is bleeding Billions of dollars...this is NOT how my tax money should be spent.

I'll be the first one to back up the importance of PR Events, but there were probably many other ways to more cost-effectively promote the vehicle.

cbrowder says:

Spiderman and Cadillac? Spiderman was at my nephew's 10th birthday party last month. Did they also have a clown making balloon animals and a petting zoo? I have to agree with msdaisy, it doesnt seem to match with an image of American premium luxury, but whatever works right? It's like Lexus had a promotion with a guy in a Pokeman outfit. The stunts WERE cool though... in a Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider kind of way.

Wow,do they have a Drivers school of kind that teachs those skills. I would love to go there.
