Fiesta Movement Has Begun, Does Anybody Care?

fiesta-f34-950.jpg

One of our editors spotted this Ford Fiesta parked on the streets of West L.A. this morning and it reminded us that this marketing gimmick is now in full swing. The cars have been handed out and the website is live, so now the fun begins right?

Well, maybe.

Ford's idea for a video contest to pick the winners was brilliant, but the entertainment value of the videos, pics and tweets that will emerge over the next several months is questionable. I mean, as nice as the Fiesta may be, it's still just an entry-level economy car. If you're dying to know what it's like to drive one to the Grand Canyon, just go rent a Focus and pretend it's smaller.

Then again, maybe the Fiesta agents will prove us wrong.

I think Jeremy Clarkson's ridiculously thorough test of the Fiesta shows just how much fun you can have with an entry-level subcompact. Then again, he does have BBC funding at his disposal.

"If you're dying to know what it's like to drive one to the Grand Canyon, just go rent a Focus and pretend it's smaller"

So are you telling us it drives like a Focus?

Every review I've read says it's a great little car but from a picture someone sent you you've decided otherwise.

I know it goes against the American way but there's nothing wrong with owning a really good affordable small car.

To dismiss it as "it's still just an entry-level economy car" is like dismissing the G8 as just a family sedan with a stronger engine or a Mercedes as just a German taxi with nicer trim.

Nissan tried this viral video/ad campaign a few years back with the introduction of the Sentra. It didn't work too well. But at least the Fiesta looks better.

If it was for the newest iteration of the Sentra, you should already know why it didn't work. By every account I've heard, the newest Sentra is a few steps behinds the previous version in the fun to drive department, especially in SE-R trim.

I couldn't care less about the marketing campaign, but I am interested in the car.

I saw a purple one in Hollywood.

I think it's dumb they gave them Euro versions. I'm pretty sure that one is good. I want to know what our version will be like more than anything.

If we are only getting a boring Americanized sedan version, then this is a cruel tease! I always thought Ford missed a chance to truly compete with the Rabbit when they yanked the original Fiesta to replace it with the boring, Americanized Escort.

As much as I have been driving around LA I haven't seen one yet.

I thought the movement idea was retarded but what do I know? I'm 38 so I'm suppose to out of touch, but I'm not.

This is no joke we will get the hatchback, not the 5 door but the 3 door. But if you do enough screaming at Ford, how much tooling does it take to make all three versions here? I say DROP the sedan anyway, how many Yaris sedans do you see? I see far more hatchbacks. Scion doesn't sell a sedan at all and that doesn't seem to hurt sales one bit.

Ford wants to make the sedan because in America hatchback screams "Cheap" like a bird. Those people can buy a Toyota Corolla appliance to drive around.

I say bring the 5 door, 3 door and sell the sedan if you must but I think you'll find the 5 and 3 doors out sell the sedan by 2-1 margin. People want something either cool or interesting if its not fast and the sedan just isn't cool enough, why does Ford keep letting people drive the hatchbacks and give out hatches to Movement winners????

Are they trying to tell us something? It would save them quite a bit of money to just bring the car over as-is with some minor tweaks in suspension tuning to numb and dumb down the handling for the ham-fisted drivers out there.

There are quite a few here on the streets of San Francisco. I was wondering about that as i have not seen any in dealerships. I think thats it is a good looking car and as another reader previously commented, After Jeremy Clarkson Review of it, i think it can be a fun car also.
