2009 New York Auto Show: Infiniti News -- GT-R Powered Flagship Is Dead

#NYIAS For more than a year, there have been unending rumors of an Infiniti-badged, Nissan GT-R-powered sedan. The car was said to be an all-wheel-drive flagship for the luxury brand, powered by the same twin-turbo V6 used in Nissan's supercar.

Then Infiniti showed the GT-R-powered Essence concept at the Geneva show, and the rumors fired up again. Word was that the sedan plan was dead and the new flagship was to be an Essense-like coupe with GT-R power.

Well, today Inside Line has learned that both plans have hit the trash can. Infiniti has decided that a high-powered flagship is just not what it needs right now. Not at a time when S-Class and 7 Series sales are way down.

"It's fair to say that there's nothing in the product plan for an Infiniti flagship right now," Brian Carolin, Nissan's Senior VP of Sales and Marketing, told IL. "It's just not a priority in today's climate."

"Our dealers would rather have something with more volume," he continued. Twelve months ago they would have said yes; now it's way down on their wish list." -- Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief

Thank God... it would have been a disaster for the GT-Rs "specialness".

It's a wise move on their part. I'd like to see Nissan-Infiniti release an IS killer. It could be a higher volume car just like the Lexus IS or Acura TSX.

xelement, there is such a vehicle called the Infiniti G.

I still think Infiniti should build a flagship sedan based on the GT-Rs modified front-midship platform.

stupid move - talk about short sightedness; 12-24 months from now the economy will be back and infiniti will have no products that stir the soul.

thaitanium15, while the G35 would appear to crush the IS, the IS has a 3.5l motor that produces 306 hp as well, and getting technical, the G is actually down 9 ft.-lbs (268 G, 277 IS) which contributes to it's .3 second lag behind said lexus. I have a Nissan/Infiniti product myself which I happen to love, and even though the new Maxima and new G37 stack up favorably against the IS, they're still certaintly not IS "killers" either

Good move, that car is busted. Ugly as can be.

thanks god...what the hell were they thinking in the first place!..i dont get it...why even consider making a 4-door version of a specialty sports car?..lets see how the panamera does first...but then again, porsche is in a completely different circumstance...porsche does not have a 4-door sedan in their lineup!..imagine how ugly a 4-door corvette would look like!

*wonders how they will make up the R&D money spent on the GT-R now*

I just purchased 2005 Infinity G35, and power is not the problem with it. The car is nuts fast and capable. The engine could have a sweeter note close to redline, like the old VQ 3.0 liter engine, and the clutch pedal and shifter could have better engagement. I wouldn't care that the IS350 is faster - it doesn't have a manual option, and is therefore eliminated from consideration. Yet, I've heard Toyota has a greatly refined V6, so Nissan had best refine its own powertrain to stay on top and finally rival the Bimmer.

This Infinity GT-R would be a bizarre flagship. Everyone knows Infinity is really Nissan, and the GT-R is already one of the most unique sports cars. I'd like Infinity to push the beauty and styling envelope to rival BMW's staid design, while continuing to deliver incredible reliability. Sort of leapfrogging BMW and Lexus by creating a new paradigm, much like Jaguar has done.

Nuh-uh. You don't kill models based off Motor Trend Cars of the Year. That is bad business.

xelement, Nissan already has released an IS killer, its called the G37. What Infiniti does not have is an IS-F/M3 killer, which base on my research Infiniti has no plans for either. The TSX is actually a level down from the IS/3-series/G37/C-class/A4. It would be kinda neat to see Infiniti release a "volume vehicle" similar to a TSX to draw more first time buyers. Plus, for 2010, the TSX will be sporting the TL's 280 hp V6. I would likely go with a G37 6-MT, but I wish Infiniti would use a more refined V6 that could rival the Bimmers smooth straight-6 which has been a benchmark motor for years, even before the days of the 135/335/535 w/300 hp. Thank goodness for Infiniti dropping plans for this vehicle, it was one automotive sin for which it surely would have to repent.

How about an M37 AWD non-turbo? Wait, would they even give the 6-speed MT?
