#NYIAS Will GMC survive the General Motors gutting by the government? Who knows, but in the meantime it will carry on with the new 2010 GMC Terrain starting this summer.
A somewhat large compact SUV, the five-passenger Terrain benefits from the efficiency of GM's new direct-injection 2.4-liter engine. Combined with a six-speed automatic transmission, the Terrain is said to deliver 30 mpg. So if you don't want to drive a Camry or even a Malibu, but still need decent mileage on your commute, here's an SUV alternative.
Then again, if you want an SUV with guts, there's a "professional grade" V6 with 264 hp. And given the Terrain's size, that's probably the one worth having anyway. -- Ed Hellwig, Lead Senior Editor

"A somewhat large compact SUV"????????
I kind of like it, but this to me is the same as Jeep coming out with the Compass. Yeah it will sell, but IMO, it's hurting their image.
But hey, it's the ONLY vehicle they have that has different sheet metal than the Chevy counterpart.

BTW, can we get a stinkin page break or 4?

Note to Ed: "professional grade" will get you bankrupt. The SUV that gets 30mpg is the one worth having. Get with the solution already.

noflash1 -
Agree in principal, but this is a CUV, and a Compact one at that.
A GMC that can't tow or haul anything is pointless.
Just let Caddy and Chevy run with this one.

I was going to say, noflash1, "Pro Grade" = Towing. Moving this thing and towing something at the same time, good luck with the 4banger.

why would they be recommending the V6 when the best selling CR-V needs over 9 seconds to get to 60 with it's 2.4L engine? The Terrain will be no slower so the I-4 will work for many customers. People who buy the CR-V or Escape aren't expecting to win drag races.

GMC dealers want something relatively efficient to sell. The Envoy is gone. GMC dealers know how to move competitive product and they will move this when they get it.

The Envoy is gone, with the Acadia as the replacement, not this.
The Terrain is much, much smaller. I think the 4cyl will be fine for this vehicle. I'm just saying this vehicle should not exist in the GMC line-up.

Smilez - Would they not be trying to offset the loss of the Torrent for the P-B-G dealers? They're similar in similar in size, no?
Just a thought.
Otherwise, I agree, it has no business as a GMC

The wheelbases are identical at 112.5. So yes, I could see that. Especially with the future plans for Pontiac.
But that shouldn't make GMC say, "We'll take it".
As I stated above, I'm still pissed about the Compass. NO BUSINESS wearing a Jeep badge. this is better, but still wrong.
I say this with nothing but humor, but this "GMC Cute Ute" reminds me of a kid driving around in one of those Power Wheels Cadillac Escalades. "Look at me dad, I'm driving a GMC just like you!"

Correction: "a Caddy just like you!"
You get the idea.

I would hold judgement on that until we find out what it weighs and how much power this engine makes across it's entire power band.
There's nothing more frustrating then a small engine in a heavy vehicle if you have to rev the crap out of it to keep up with traffic.

3800lbs. 182 hp.

Smilez - Course not, but dealers need something to sell. I was talking to mine the other day and he was pretty bummed about losing half of pontiac's lineup.
Nice analgoy btw.
Firstwagon - Assuming it's like the torrent, in the 3700-3800 range, that I4 better be good. I've heard over 180hp but no torque figures, or whether it'll be blown in any way.

You horsepower freaks quit it with your... horsepower freak-ness.
The Mazda CX-7 is getting I4 161 hp for 3800 lb.
The Toyota Venza has I4 182 hp for up to 3945 lb.
The Toyota Highlander has I4 187 hp for 3847 lb.
The Toyota Rav4 has I4 179 hp for up to 3576 lb.
The Honda CR-V has I4 166 hp for up to 3549 lb.
0-60 in 9-10 seconds is OK.
So says me. I'm aaawesome with 3 a's.

I see GM has retained the design from the last Equinox, bestowing the vehicle with an extra narrow cargo bay.

I think this and the Equinox is a good vehicle for GM. The Acadia and all others may be to large for some. As most people on this sight I would get the V6. Sorry billt9 I would choose the bigger engine on all vehicles on that list of yours, like I have done on my last 2 SUVs. BTW doesn't the CX-7 turbo 4 have more power than 161, like 244?
Not sure if I like the Terrain style as good as Equinox. SRX too wagon looking for me. I am waiting to see Saab's final entry.
