Sources tell Inside Line that Mazda will name Derek Jenkins (above left) as its new head of North American design.

Jenkins currently heads up Volkswagen's California design studio. He's overseen projects like the Volkswagen GX3 and R-GT concepts.

Mazda has been without a design chief since Franz Von Holzhausen left to head up Tesla's design efforts, the fruit of which was just revealed in leaked photos of the Tesla Model S.

Let's hope the first thing he does is get rid of the smiley face design.

Why is it that car designers' look is jeans, dress shirt and suit jacket?
No wonder so many cars are parts bin designs...

This guy is one of the most talented designers in the business. Look at the series of rather lifeless vehicles imported into the States by VW in recent years, all of which were designed in Germany for Europeans.

Good news for Mazda, bad news for VW.

Insiders know the talent Derek's shown for years through his concept cars. Hopefully Mazda will show the will VW lacked to produce his riskier, more compelling cars.
