Later this year, when we launch the bionic version of Inside Line (you know better, stronger, faster), reader input will be taken to a whole new level. Not only will you be able to comment on every single article, big or small, but we'll be instituting a ratings system illustrated by the five stars above.
That means you'll have to two very different and very real ways to express your gratitude for our greatness. Kidding. We expect complete honesty from you, just as you expect it from us, and when we stink we want to hear it.
We'll also allow you to rate each other. Notice the thumbs up and thumbs down graphics on the comment below. Those are ratings of the comments by other readers. Seemed like a good way to keep you guys honest.
Sound good?
Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief

Will the thumbs up/down only be tracked on a per-comment basis, or will they somehow be tied to the commenter? There are many sites out there with similar functionality, and every time someone posts/comments their rating is displayed for everyone to see. So if all I make is useless comments and get flagged down, this fact will be blatantly obvious on every comment.
Also, seriously, please (re)enable editing of comments. Comments are fat fingered on a daily basis and users seem to complain pretty regularly. Even this relatively terse posting has taken me upwards of 5 minutes because I've been burned by the lack editing before and want to ensure that I didn't do anything to anger the grammar/spelling/etiquette gods.

Considering the vitriol in some of the comment sections, I'd say this is a very good ideal.

Uh, as if to echo CaptainChaos's point, I meant to type "idea." :)

I'm convinced that Edmunds intentionally removed the Edit feature and has no intention of bringing it back. I'm very disappointed.
A surprisingly useful feature, that you used to have, was telling us how many unread comments there were in a thread. It keeps me from having to try and figure out where I was in a thread with 80 comments.
I'd prefer the return of both the above features before you implement a popularity contest, I mean rating system.

Interesting developments. However bear in mind that on the Internet ratings tend to be an indication not of quality but of whether the reader agrees with you. In cyberspace, when people respectfully disagree they tend to leave off of the respect part. I find that the reason is often because the line between fact and opinion gets blurred.

Goody, now the import fanboys and domestic boosters can get into thumb wars. This should be entertaining.
