For months, we've been hard at work at redesigning Inside Line. We've promised you the best automotive enthusiast site on the web, and you're going to get it. The launch date for the new and improved version of IL is fast approaching, but we thought you'd like to see what we're working on in the meantime.
When we say all-new we mean it. Inside Line is even getting a new logo. Here are ten examples of the hundreds of IL logos our designers have come up with. Which ones do you like? Which ones make you retch?
Don't sugar coat it. And check back to this space every once in a while to see what the future Inside Line will soon look like.

My vote is 3rd, 5th, 6th or 8th one. Out of those my favorite is the 8th one. All of them are clean and easy to read and recognize. The others are too convoluted for me.

4 and 6 work for me.

3, 6, or 8 are my pick.
10 is OK becuse the 'E' looks like a manual shift gate over the 'I' and 'N' of inside line.
1 is horrible. It looks 40 years out of date.

Of this bunch, the 3rd is the best, but I know I've seen that stylized N before. Please don't go all Web 2.0 and cut out vowels--lame. The rest are just stylized fonts...you guys can do better.

Honestly, I think the existing one looks better than any you posted above...
If I was forced to pick one, though, I'd have to go with #3....begrudgingly....

I'd say that #3 is by far the best. My other votes would go towards 5 and 6.

actually only the 7th makes sense because it shows the 'enthusiast' side of the page.
1. Belongs on a box with some cheap toy.
2. Looks like it belongs on some old truck
3. Looks too much like e-surance logo.
4. Looks like some software product logo.
5. Same as 4 only even more bland
6. Too cliche
7. Best one
8. Belongs on a box of Lego
9. Looks like a stamp and doesn't make sense. What are those 3 lines supposed to be?
10. Makes even less sense than 9 and belongs in a Modern Art museum.

All of them are hard on the eyes in black and white form.
#3 or #6 are my choices.

Another vote for 3, 5, and possibly sixth. I would have to see the rest of the updated site to make sure it fit the character.

I dig numbers 3 and 5. They are simple yet look really elegant.
7 9 and 10 are absolutely disgusting and hard to look at

I have to agree with tryan in that the current logo looks way better than the mock ups presented here. You guys have preached the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" with many an automotive redesign. Take some of your own advice.

I still like the current one, changing it would be like the Ford Fusion update- different, but not necessarily better. I like 3, 5 and 6 (3 the most).

Without a doubt, the one you featured in your blog entry (#7). The vanity plate idea is conceptually very strong, and it's presented in a contemporary manner. From a practical standpoint the shape of a license plate has normal proportions (length vs. height), so it will be very flexible in terms of future usage.
The other logos are really very weak. They're mostly "eye candy" with little if anything to do with automobiles; really, they're quite disappointing. Yeah, logo #6 suggests 1950's auto script—something that's been done so many times, it's beyond being a cliché.
It's good that your designers had the sense to first design the logo in B&W. If you can solve the design problems in B&W, you can always convert it to color, but not necessarily the other way around. That's something I always stress to my design students whenever I give them an visual identity project to work on.
One suggestion: Is there a way to give the letters a subtle 3-D appearance, so that they truly look like the raised letters found on a license plate?

Jeez, first TTAC and now you guys! What's wrong with the current logo?
I'm going to have to go with either #3 or #5. They're both clean, simple and quickly get the point across.

Numbers 3 and 5. Easy to read, modern, not an obvious ripoff of the Ferrari font, and suitably wide for internet banners.

3rd and 8th for me. The 7th one can be misleading. When you simply remove the vowels for a vanity plate, it causes you to potentially read it wrong (ie. Inside Lane?!?). The last thing you want is to confuse potential readers with what the name of the site is. Besides, the whole vanity plate idea comes off chintzy and childish to me.
The 3rd idea is clean and crisp (as are a lot of them) but also alludes to a driver/car connection because of the style of the N.
I don't really think it HAS to tie in a car connection, however. It's all about the image you want to convey. Most of these convey a clean and simple image. Which I think Edmunds needs, especially considering that the Inside Line site has been a jumbled mess for the last 7 or 8 years...
rsholland says:
06:29 AM, 03/ 3/09
Flic, good point about the readability of #7. That concerned me a bit too. Perhaps it needs a supporting tagline of some sort with the name spelled out?
As to not needing a visual tie to being a car site, I think you're wrong there. That's the essence of what Edmunds is all about. If it's just a "type solution," it could represent anything. Nope, that's not the way to go.
rsholland says:
06:33 AM, 03/ 3/09
Hmmm... Maybe, in small type, between the two bottom license plate screws, insert "INSIDE LINE," just like the word "EDMUNDS" is treated above.

Ditto. But if it has to change I prefer 3. I think Inside Line would be better served to bring back the edit button, add a new comments button that scrolls you to the first post you haven't read yet, cookies that keep you logged in reliably, and less than a 30 second delay when posting a new comment. or you could take easy street and roll back to the old site and 3 of my 4 issues would be fixed.
