Full Test: 2010 Ford Mustang GT

So the 2010 Ford Mustang is all-new this year. All spiffed up and ready to take on the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and 2010 Dodge Challenger.

Will it be much of a fight? On paper it doesn't look like it, but as Scott Oldham, Editor in Chief of Inside Line, points out in our latest road test, this Mustang is already faster than the Dodge and should hold its own against the Camaro.

This of course leads to a bigger question: Does anybody care? Are big muscle coupes like these destined to linger on dealer lots as buyers save their money for more practical purchases?

Or maybe it's the other way around. Maybe these retro-themed muscle cars will remind Americans why the Big Three are worth saving.

Ford would do well to keep the cost of the V6 low and the fuel efficiency high. The 6cyl could subsidize the V8 long enough to keep it afloat.

Most Mustangs sold are V6s with automatics: in a sense, chickmobiles. Maybe the focus groups did indeed show this, so that's why there are some "compromises", such as overboosted steering. From reading this review though, it seems like Ford has another winner on its hands, allegedly beating both the Challenger RT and Genesis coupe; I don't think it will defeat the SS Camaro in a straight line unless the Chevy's gearing is absurdly tall.

One thing it looks like they worked on a little was fuel economy, up to 16/24 from 15/23. But when you consider competitors like the Challenger (16/25), G37 (17/25), and Genesis (18/27 AT) get better mileage with similar power, it is evident that the modular engine line has fallen to the back of the pack. I haven't seen any mpg figures for the Ecoboost 3.5L, but I imagine it will end up getting about the same mileage as the 4.6L -- just with more power.

I thought the captions for the pictures (and the pictures themselves) that accompanied the article were great.

I especially loved the power slide series.

Good stuff guys, way to make it more than just a review.

Whenever I think of a drivers car, the Mustang never seems to surface in my mind. Is the 2010 Stang supposed to change that?

Personally, I would love a v6 mustang with a manual transmission to be my next car. This is largely because despite being a distinctive looking sporty car, it is still very practical (given not as a family car). It seems that the z is much more likely to sit on dealer lots with its small interior room and stiff suspension, the 2 things edmunds argues that the z is the better sports car for.
