2009 New York Auto Show: Forget the tD, Scion Will Unveil iQ Concept Instead

iQ_2-950.jpg

Looks like we're going to have to wait to see the tD coupe. Scion just announced that its 2009 New York Auto Show press conference will feature a micro sub-compact concept car. Man that sounds small.

The description can only mean one thing: the iQ, Toyota's answer to the Smart Fortwo. Already on sale in Europe and Japan, the iQ seats four in a pinch and measures just under ten feet long. Sounds like a tough sell in the U.S., but Scion seems like the right brand to give it a try.

The Toyota IQ. Putting the 'toy' in Toyota.

This will be a fantastic car for people who live in the city, and are very short on parking.

I can see this being a big hit with young urban types (it's funky and modern) and with seniors (it's cheap and easy to park).

Not really a family car but it's great to see car makers putting some engineering effort into small cars.

I've been keeping up with the iQ on the UK car sites. From what's been said so far, it looks like the iQ is the "smart" car that the smart fortwo should have been all along. I probably wouldn't buy one, but I'll still take one on a test drive when (if?) they show up on dealers' lots just to say I did.

Fifth Gear loves this car.

WhatCar? says the Aygo is better, 2/5.

4Car says 4/5, worst thing is its price tag.

Clarkson says 3/5, "They really do make Mondeos and Volvos and so on look awfully wasteful and unnecessary.","I’d rather drive an iQ than be driven by Albert in his Cayenne."

Not bad. Only one dissenting review... replacing the optimum vehicle with another Toyota product...

Looking at this car, I want to glue a red dodge ball on the front to complete the Clown Car look.

Looking forward to seeing them on the road. Once again, Europe wins and gets the interesting cars early.

Should sell just fine -- as long as they can steal some of the smart's marketshare. And with Toyota behind it, it should be easy.

So this gets a whopping 10mpg more than the smart car and produces less emissions (99g/km vs 104g/km). On top of that, the Smart is a two seater and his car has a rear seat that provides enough space to fit three adults + 1 child.

I have my serious doubts about the intelligence and/or sanity of anyone who makes the choice to purchase a Smart instead of this...
