Looks like a nice improvement. I like the wider stance. And the GT finally gets a 6-speed manual!

I believe the 6-speed manual replaces the 5-speed manual in all cases, even non-turbo H4s.

Here's the SOA press release:

that looks stupid. maxima and other japanese brands all blended into something you would see at a chinese knockoff brand's lineup.

What is wrong with subaru and their styling lately

I think it's kind of ugly, and it looks like a bad update of the existing vehicle. Sad.

Looks like a revised-upgraded last-gen Infiniti G35.

It looks good. The interior looks like a good place to be, and big.
It is certainly far higher quality than a Chinese knockoff.

In fact, I'm going as far as to say this is the nicest midsizer on the market that I can think of. Interior looks better than a Mazda6.

A bunch of images here on the SOA media site.

What is it with Subaru. Again no automatic with the turbo and a CVT with the hugeky underpowered 4 banger.

I have a 2007 Forester with the same basic engine and lower power peak or not, its barely up to the task of moving my car, much less a bigger Legacy.

Why oh why can't I get the turbo with the 5-speed auto?

Stupid computers. Sorry for the duplicate post.

athakur999 says:

Personally, I like how it looks. It's a nice evolution from the current design. Not a huge fan of the interior but will reserve judgement until I see some pics with the nav unit as those tend to clean things up. Also, this car looks like a base model so the higher trims may improve things as well.

I don't really mind the decision to drop the automatic with the turbo. I think the performance crowd would naturally gravitate to the turbo model with a manual and the non-performance crowd would gravitate to the automatic with the more smoother H6, so it works out.

rsholland says:

01:06 PM, 03/31/09

athakur999, I think it's the 2.5i Premium that is shown here.

So, in effect, these images are somewhat of a tease, as we haven't yet seen the 2.5 GT or the 3.6R models.

pat1usmc says:

01:06 PM, 03/31/09

It wasn't always that way. You used to be able to get the Legacy GT with an auto and now you can't get the Forester XT without the auto...

rsholland says:

01:10 PM, 03/31/09

On second thought, it might be the 3.6R Premium, as those appear to be 17" wheels, which the H-6 models have.

joefrompa says:

01:14 PM, 03/31/09

Rsholland - There is no way that's the 3.6r premium in the pictures; it's a 2.5 n/a model.

Bankerdanny - I think your concern about the automatic is going to be a 1-year thing. I'm betting that they are revising their automatic for this usage....maybe the current 5-speed auto couldn't handle the fast spool up of the new engine when it's not yet locked up.

I'm very excited to see more about this new engine layout. It looks like the new WRX engine except with a re-located turbo for faster response and possibly a revised catalyst for lower back-pressure (than the WRX). That torque coming on at 2000 rpms is pretty sweet.

I'm also dying to see the weight. I'm hoping they kept it around 3500 pounds or less.

In for more info :)

Joe

rsholland says:

bankerdanny, Subaru is trying to separate the 2.5 GT from the 3.6R H-6. In the past there was some model overlap in that they often competed for the same customer, at least when it came to automatics.

Now the 2.5GT, being 6-speed manual-only, is clearly the sportier of the two, and will appeal much more so to that sports-oriented crowd; whereas the the 3.6R, being auto-only, will appeal more to those more comfort-oriented and less sports-oriented.

estreka says:

I think it looks kinda M45ish. Not bad.

rsholland says:

01:22 PM, 03/31/09

rsholland says:

01:24 PM, 03/31/09

Weight is about 50 pounds more than last year's car.

drwales says:

01:28 PM, 03/31/09

But the filenames on the Subaru site all contain the root 2010_Leg_2.5i, which would strongly suggest that we're looking at a base CVT. If the base CVT has those rims for something like $21k, we can't complain.

I'm most intrigued by the hi-res version on the Subaru site of the interior pic -- the small left-hand gauge in the instrument binnacle appears to be labelled + and - and what possible says "MPG." !? The speedo looks similar, if not the same to the new Forester, so I'm guessing just an idiot light for temperature.

Other than the flat-looking seat cushions, I like it. You can tell how much wider it is by the cup-holders, which are no longer fore-and-aft...

rsholland says:

01:32 PM, 03/31/09

drwales, the e-brake is now electric, which means no brake lever on the center console. That frees up space for the cupholders to be side-by-side.

hondacura4 says:

I like the current Legacy better inside and out as the new one looks like a Infiniti M35.

arkangyl says:

It looks like a Sebring.... Terrible!

kgford says:

This car looks good but I will forgo final decision until I acually sit in and drive it. To everyone saying it looks horrible and drives horribly, none of you have acually seen the car in person yet or have had the chance to drive it!

GS 350 tail light!!!!!!!!!!!!

firstwagon says:

08:19 AM, 04/ 1/09

Hopefully they'll continue to build the wagon for the Canadian market. Most Legacys are wagons so it would be stupid to cancel it.

Of course the Focus wagon was the best selling Focus version here and they cancelled that so brains are not always a strong suit with auto makers.

rsholland says:

10:41 AM, 04/ 1/09

Well, there certainly will be an Outback wagon, which will be introduced later.

84skyblue says:

That is one butt ugly Chrysler Sebring/Lexus GS freak show. I own a 2008 Legacy and I'm very disappointed in what Subaru has done to my car.

luvfishing says:

This is actually a tasteful update. There are shades of the Altima (C-pillar) and G35 - and that is not necessarily a bad thing. The Legacy was always a bit small to compete with other mid-size sedans. From the pictures it appears to have more of a presence - which is good. And it still has Subaru's quirkiness - but toned down a bit. This is a more "mature" looking vehicle - and that's a good thing if they want to continue up-market. I am very anxious to see one in person. The larger size does not appear to have resulted in much weight gain - so it is not bloated - and hopefully it will maintain or improve its performance numbers. Finally - this is not a Sebring/Lexus GS look-alike (it really still looks like a Subaru - just a more upscale Subaru).

wagonista says:

What an abomination! Way to go Subaru after Camry buyers.

And by the way regarding the article - who would write this:

"So all 23 of you out there who are fans of the Legacy GT wagon can go ahead and stop reading now."

Is this journalism? Really? Or personal crusade against the sports wagon segment? Trauma from childhood of being ferried around in a 9 passenger Buick boat?

Sports wagon are hot however under appreciated in the U.S. market. Perfect blend of utility and performance. And Subaru Legacy was one of the finest wagons ever offered.
