Hmm...probably not the way the BMW X 1 engineers planned it back in Munich. Oh well, once you've augured yourself into a snow bank in the middle of nowhere there aren't too many options.
In this case, a call to the Volkwagen Tiguan that was along for comparison was all it took to get the new BMW sport utility free. I'm sure there's a joke in there about Xdrive versus 4Motion, but we'll leave that up to you.

Which one is which? I can't tell.

The one on the left is unmistakably VW.

My guess is the 4wd systems are close enough that the difference lies more in choice of tires and driver skill.

Or just that you're stuck in snow and it's time for another 4WD car to pull you out.
Like there's any car that's immune from ever getting stuck in snow.
That X1's got a really long hood. Like the new Z4, I wonder how you know where your hood is... and when you're at an intersection, your hood's sticking out in the middle of the intersection and people going the other direction honk you because your nose is annoyingly in the middle of the road... but you have to be that far out otherwise you can't see the cross traffic since your driver's seat is so far back in the car... nice design but functionally inept.

Surprising the X1 had so much trouble. Wonder what tires they had on it?
The long hood reminds me of the old Pontiac Grand Prix of the 60's, which being almost all hood was a nightmare to see cross-traffic from inside.

Having never seen a Tiugan on the road, I wouldn't know CWMOO. I thought it was an old Outlander.

the X1 seems to have a lower profile set of tires; i'd venture a guess that the tires had something to do with it. AWD is pretty worthless with the wrong tires, as Insideline has demonstrated time and again.

"Like there's any car that's immune from ever getting stuck in snow."
You'd be amazed how hard it is to get an AWD car stuck with a good set of skinny winter tires. I stuffed my Subaru through countless snow piles and down many unplowed roads without ever getting it stuck.

This is a demotivational poster waiting to happen, much like the Silverado pulling the Toyota Tundra race trailer.

Just looking at the picture some more...is that a before or after picture?
There's no way it should be stuck in that shot. You've got 3 wheels (at least) in the clear.

I don't care what anyone says. That's one of the funnier things I've read today.
