Is the Nissan GT-R Faster With Detuned Launch Control System?

gtrlaunch-555.jpg

By now you probably know all about Nissan's fix for the GT-R's "transmission problems". If not, you can read all the details in our feature story on Nissan's nightmare.

In short, Nissan decided to reprogram the transmission to deliver softer launches with the VDC off and more aggressive launches with the VDC on. It called the changes "drivability improvements". Its memo to dealers stated, "Standing acceleration capability with VDC ON (VDC-R mode) will improve compared to the original model year 2009 performance while such acceleration with VDC OFF will be moderated."

Sounds reasonable enough.

Well, now there's an owner who had his GT-R reprogrammed and and he's claiming an even faster time at the track, specifically a run of 11.34 @ 120.85mph.

Key word here: "claiming". With no other evidence than the owner's word, it hard to verify the run.

We're a little suspicious of the numbers to say the least. The quickest GT-R we ever tested ran an 11.6 @ 120.9mph. Shaving nearly three tenths off that time with a less aggressive launch system seems optimistic at best.

We've heard some reasonable arguments from knowledgeable people that say the numbers are plausible, but until we see some more substantive proof, we'll take these numbers with a grain of salt. You should too.

120 mph , is 120 mph. Thats the power the car makes. The ET is all about traction. Wheelspin is not faster than no wheelspin.

The video of the car Inside Line tested in Japan spun the wheels for a good distance off the line.

A tenth of a second in the 60 foot time(not 0-60 time, many people get confused) is worth about two tenths at the end of the 1/4 mile.

I saw something that said the air density that day for this 11.3 GT-R was nearly -2000 feet. Thats good air. Good turbo air. That will make a turbo car happy, and fast. If it can find traction, it will be very fast.

Edmunds, I am the driver who hit this time and have time slip in hand (will be scanned as soon as possible).

My mph clearly shows the car is bone stock. Feel free to call the track owner to verify my time. It was done at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, Louisiana on 2/4/09 @ 6:09 pm.
