We've already tested the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, but enthusiasts keen on exploring every facet of its performance credentials now have another data point to consider--our chassis dyno result.
Hyundai pegs its brand-spankin' new Genesis Coupe's 3.8-liter V6 at 306-hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. To detemine just how truthful they've been in this rating, we strapped a Genesis to the Dynojet rollers at MD Automotive's facility in Westminster, CA, and let 'er rip.
Hit the jump for the dyno chart.
Click for a larger image. And forgive the little gap in the data at 5300 rpm--our speed pick-up momentarily lost its tach signal.
Overall, this result by the Genesis coupe indicates that the V6 version is generating the full output claimed by Hyundai. Of note in particular is the character of the torque curve--flat's the word.
Remember, don't go comparing results across dyno manufacturers because the planet will tilt off-axis and we'll all freeze to death. Feel free to pontificate how the Genesis compares to the BMW 335i and Infiniti G37 we measured a while back, though--we used the same dyno for all three.

Wow this is the most linear thing ever.
Just that both the 335i and G37 have more power or torque to make them both go faster than the Genesis Coupe.
jederino says:

Actually, doesn't this show higher torque than the G37 graph, which seems to peak below 240?

Coming for someone who has been around long enough to see Hyundai grow from a mass produced disposable car with a reputation for disinigrating faster than a plastic shopping bag and the most annoying door chime of the 80’s. O the hate of that chime! Too today, where we are comparing Hyundai to BMW? Infiniti? Lexus? I could not stress more to my customers never to buy a Pony or Excel. Now I am looking at the cost of the new Genesis Coupe as a great deal for a daily driver? Maybe Hyundai should give classes to the soon to be dead Big Three?

I think you guys have something wrong with your Genesis coupe. Motor Trend got 0-60 of 5.5 seconds, which is more in line with the numbers stated by Hyundai than yours.
bankerdanny says:

It would be helpfull if the Hyundai graph (increments of 25) used the same scale as the Infiniti/BMW (increments of 20).
When youplace the charts side by side you have to make adjustments in your head for the differences.

Edmunds test numbers are always on the conservative side of the equation. As usual, Im sure even faster times will be made by other publications.
However, even though Edmunds results are usually slower than others, this car seems to be a bit off the pace given its power to weight ratio. A V6 Accord 6MT is much faster (straight line) and it shouldnt be.

If the graph is showing wheel HP and TQ, that engine is making more power than advertised. You normally account for 15-20% parasitic drivetrain loss, so 306 hp x .80 = 245 hp.
With 277 RWHP, that would indicate a loss of only 9%, which is too low. Applying the 20% rule again, that engine could be making 346HP at the crank. That seems too much though.
carzzz says:
04:04 PM, 02/26/09
279 wheel hp (real hp) and it weights less than 3500lb should be at low 5 sec to 60mph and trap speed of 103+mph.

Anyone else find the Track model's standard, non-deletable wing a boy racer destruction of the car's naturally clean and gorgeous profile and rear? Also why the limited colors on the track model? I want blue! Anyway I think that torque limiting system is really hurting the acceleration times. I hope the 2.0T doesn't have this. I wouldn't think it'd need it, given the lack of torque on upshift given the displacement and turbo lag.

The engine in the Hyundai genesis sedan, even though it was rated at 375 horsepower, was "quite an underperforming engine" according to edmunds. And look at these numbers for the 2008 Hyundai Tiburon SE - 172 hp, 2986 lbs, and it's only rated at 16/24 mpg. For comparison, a 2009 Civic SI - 197 hp, 2899 lbs, 21/29 mpg. And even a BMW 128i - 230 hp, 3252 lbs, 18/28 mpg. In order to become an actual luxury brand, I think Hyundai needs to catch up on engine development.

Hyundai's Lamda 3.8 engine is on par with any other manufactures power wise and it produces it's power on REGULAR fuel. Civic Si, BMW, Infiniti all require more expensive premium fuel. You can make all the excuses you want but Hyundai has a winner with this car. It's a big reason why the aftermarket is already getting ready to support this car in a huge way. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe will be the next big tuner car and it will over shadow any other car in it's class.
To see what I mean one of the better Genesis Forums (http://Genesisforums.org) has a ton of vendors, like Vivid Racing, Buschur Racing, RealTune, etc. Reference link below:

Okay. I like the Genesis sedan. This coupe is pretty damn sweet, too. I just can't get myself passed that slanted H on the grill and decklid. It's one thing for us to ogle this car. It's another thing entirely to go out and stick down close to thirty large to own one. Anybody up for that?

Thatguyuknow -
Just an FYI, the Civic SI's engine is now ~8 years old. It came out in the 2002 RSX Type-S.
Since then, it's had engine re-programming, a new intake and exhaust manifold, the addition of a balance shaft, and drive-by-wire throttle but the essential engine has remained about the same.
M_thrizzle - 15-20% parasitic loss is a ridiculous figure for a modern RWD powerful car. That's AWD territory, insofar as parasitic loss is concerned.
12% is a better measure.

I always loved the 2nd generation Tiburon - at least how it looks. Back in 2005 I almost bought one, but the V6 in it is/was a joke. By 2006 there were rumors of a 3.3 in the next gen. Tiburon, but to my knowlege nothing like a 3.8 RWD. Now Hyundai comes with a 3.8 RWD with 300hp+ at the crank for an affordable price. I guess that I'm not getting that Camaro after all. The Genesis Coup weighs less and can seat up to 5 (including children). I don't compare the Genesis coupe to a G37, etc., my choice is between the Camaro and the Genesis and so far the Genesis wins. Will it ever get the V8 in the Genesis sedan? That'll be something.

billt9,
25 years? What in the world are you talking about? Hyundai's plan started in 1998. By '04 they'd already gotten up to the top levels in the Power survey. By '05 they started getting the dynamics at least largely down along with styling. Now they've got a handle on power and fuel economy. My calendar isn't showing any 25 years.

I remember the Hyundia excel.....and being stranded in one in East Oakland, Ca on a not so safe night about 20 years ago. Swore i'd never buy one. Well looks like i'm eating my swear. I've been following the car since i heard about in early 2007. Hyundai is spot on with the Sonata and the Veracruz. The Rasied the bar with Genesis Sedan. Now that the coupe has been released, They need to stroke that v8 to a 5.0 liter or better and make a super coupe or m fighter sedan. Or better yet, nice pickup truck.

Just think while the Not so Big Three were pumping out crappy SUV after SUV and rolling in their profits, Hyundai was thinking long term and getting better and better. Detroit is getting everything it deserves which does not include that stimulus package. They should rot.

I wouldn't jump the gun on that one. I like the Genesis but a Korean luxury car in a class where status is all important and a coupe in a market where few people buy coupes isn't going to change the world.
The big 3 built SUV's because buyers wanted them. Whether you like SUV's or not is meaningless, a smart company builds what sells and I still have doubts as to whether Hyundai has guessed correctly.

Remember folks, this is Hyundai's FIRST attempt at a true RWD sports coupe. FIRST. If their FIRST effort is this good, I have no doubt they will make even better versions down the road.
Matter of fact, Hyundai USA CEO John Krafcik was quoted as saying they are looking into building a true 2 seater roadster sports car on the Genesis platform. They have a 2.0 turbo, 2.0 turbo GDI, and 3.8 V6, and 4.6 V8 engines available to build their 2 seater sports car. All they need is the green light from Hyundai Motor Company in Korea.

nmuwildcat65, I think you are on the wrong site, if all you want in prestige, go buy your soft bling mobiles (aka Escalade, Rolls, etc), because I sure don't want 'em. I'm going to be enjoying fun, well-built, affordable cars because I'm a car enthusiast (much like many here). Oh, and I will (as will most others on here) still be getting women because I can do more than roll up to a night club on 22's and talk trash about things I clearly don't know anything about. So, please, if you're going to say something, give some information to back up what you say, otherwise, you're gonna look like a tool.

The real question is does this car have substance...not does it have flash.
50 cent and Eminem are the same as a set of 24" rims with spinners. Amusing for a few minutes then meaningless.
Cars like this have the potential to do for Hyundai what the LS400 did for Toyota. Make an economy car company into a world player.
Doesn't sound very "plain" to me.

Edmunds like to articles like this. The Genesis Sedan given a better grade than the Lexus GS30. Now they do the same for Genesis coupe vs. the G37. Personally I like my G35x sedan, and Edmunds ranked the G better than its competition in 07 against the likes of the Is350, CTS, 335i etc. And Hyundai deserves the credit they've earned.
But any of you realize how much help the Korean government has put into help the like of Hyundai, and Samsung, etc. VW gets by because of enormous government support from Bavaria in Germany. It would seem that properly managed with proper government support will out do any private company. Has car companies got to the point where they no longer can be totally private enterprises?

Wow, that is one of the flattest torque curves I've ever seen from a naturally-aspirated engine.
I can't believe that it out-shines the VQ37 in torque output. A 30 foot-pound advantage in wheel torque is pretty significant for a mere .1L disparity in displacement between the Genesis and G37. The Hyundai 3.8 is even more impressive when you notice that it really doesn't give up that much torque output to the 335i's twin-turbo inline 6.
How this car is so much slower than the G37 and 335i despite comparable power output is beyond me, though I suspect that Hyundai might've made the torque management system a little too aggressive. Too bad. I hope that's something that's addressed in the near future (Why does a RWD coupe even need a torque management system in the first place? There are plenty of other sports cars out there with similar or more power that don't have such limitations, including the G37 and 335).
