Yesterday we received full pricing on the 2010 Ford Mustang. Today, it's Hyundai's turn.
The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is now up on Edmunds.com, so you can consider price points that range from $22,000 all the way to $31,000. There are only two port-installed options (floor mats, iPod connection), so the rest of the features are all connected to the various trim levels.
One trim level you won't see is the 2.0-liter R-Spec version that was introduced at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. Not sure what the official hold up is, but Hyundai announced a base price of $23,750 in Chicago so you can see where it fits in without much trouble.

they did a great job w/ the styling
so which is "the" Genesis to get, 4banger or 6?

There is a little bit of Ferrari California in the styling. While not attractive for a Ferrari, it's not bad!
And I second the question about which powerplant!

Well handling RWD coupe at 22K. Alternatives? The Camaro... That's it, right? If somebody mentions the Mustang I will laugh.
It's always nice when you don't have too much competition.

ctpax,
Sky/Solstice. Jap/Am mags both seem to say the Solstice handles just as well, if not better than the Miata. Just that the Solstice's interior sucks bad. But fast car and easier to drive than the Miata, since it's got more power/torque and one less gear to shift through.

hmmm, when Edmunds compared the Solstice and Miata on the track I seem to remember them actually commenting that the Solstice ended up parked and people lined up for the Miata.

I was seriously impressed with the Genesis luxury sedan as it seemed to have been very well built. However Ive still yet to sample one for myself.
The Genesis sports coupe seems like a credible entry in this segment but Ill reserve my final judgement until I sample one as on paper performance numbers tells nothing about how a vehicle feels and reacts on the street.
"It's always nice when you don't have too much competition."
Ctpax, I have to disagree as sometimes without serious competition a manufacturer can become big headed, dominant and complacent (Cisco Systems). Great, strong competition makes product execution and evolution MUCH better.

Billt, the main and critical faults with the Sky/Solstice are:
- Its build quality overall.
- The base drivetrains lack of refinement, lack of fun, lack of eagerness, and the 2.4 doenst seem like to rev. It almost like the flywheel is too heavy or the oil pan was filled with molasses.
- Shifter quality absolutely sucks.
The Solstice overall concept was awesome but given GMs extended development on the vehicle it was expected to bring a much higher level of execution and failed.
Mazda however, properly executed most all the negative issues I pointed out with the Solstice.
- Much greater refinement.
- It feels greater than the sum of its parts.
- Its drivetrain is MUCH more refined, eager, engaging and precise.
- Shifter quality is great.
- It feels/looks more expensive than it is.
Im not suggesting that the Miata is perfect as nothing is (Porsche GT3RS excluded!) however given Mazda properly executed most all the characteristics and elements that make a sports car a sports car makes it the better car.

The only competitors I can think of are the Miata and the RX-8.
This is a real niche product with a huge audience.

I think miata and solstice/sky are competing at a different level. They are roadsters, not coupes. As far as cheap performance coupes go, however, I can see rx-8 competing as well although at a much higher price point compared to the genesis.
I meant that it's nice for hyundai to have little competition in this segment, but I didn't mean us consumers.

I think we drove two different cars. The Sky I drove had none of the problems you complain about.

Until you look at what RX8s actually sell for. They get huge incentives and can be bought cheap as dirt, especially used. I got my sport pack 06 new for $21k, sticker was $27k-ish. Of course, this might also end up applying to the Genesis coupe :). But imo, nothing scares buyers away like a rotary, not even a Hyundai badge!
