First Drive: 2010 Jaguar XFR

jag-act-950.jpg

Introduced to the world at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, the 510-horsepower Jaguar XFR is the company's latest super sedan. We always liked its overlooked predecessor, the S-Type R, so it came as no surprise that this supercharged version of the XF is a fine piece of machinery.

According to European Editor Alistair Weaver, "Jaguar has finally delivered the car they've been promising ever since Ford began pumping money into the company in 1990. It's ironic that new owner Tata Motors will be the one to get the credit."

So what do you think? Is the XFR a real M5 killer?

Surprisingly, I think yes.... I think the v10 in the m5 needs to be retired... a twin turbo 8 will suffice imo

Nice Lexus GS...
this will not put a dent in BMW M5, AMG , Audi RS sales. Those boys have built up a rep of power with driveability/reliability.
The Caddy CTS V is the contender.

It will be interesting to see. The reviews of the new Jaguar are very impressive.

Could it be there's a new world order coming? The Jag XFR at top and Genesis ruling the mid ground?

The boomers are fading and the young people I know don't seem to be impressed with a car just because it's German.

Well IL when is the next comparo? The Super Sedan Showdown!

Most young people don't have $80,000 to buy a car...
M cars, AMGs, R Audis do not impress because they are German. They impress because they are amazing, and proven, automobiles.

Loks like a late 90s taurus with a body kit.

That's "looks..."

Perhaps but other cars are amazing too... like the CTS V you mentioned and the XFR and the Genesis.

Problem with the germans is BMWs are ugly now, AMGs are old man cars and you never want to own an Audi out of waranty.

"Most young people don't have $80,000 to buy a car..."

But they will and what they aspire for now is what they buy later.

nobody aspires to a jag. this isn't 1985.

hey, the 4th pic in the FirstDrive article is a poser! it doesn't have the right rims, is missing the 2 hood vent things, and has the horizontally split lower air dam things instead of the huge gaping maw (imprecise terms for an imprecise pic...).

when i have $80+k to blow, i would get something like the XKR because it's uncommon. i see M5's all over the place, unfortunately. just hope the reliability is decent so it'd spend more time on the road than in the shop! i say "to blow" because i believe that an M5 or RS6 (is the RS6 available here? RS4 is too small to compare), for example, is not 8 times better than my car; probably not twice as good. but they sell because they are special / unique. with all the rave reviews, i think Jag's just might be making a bit of a come-back with the XK and XF cars; everyone has a 5-series/E-class/A6; the XF has a nice presence in person and i think a better alternative to show off to the neighbors/co-workers. ;)

Who aspired to a 1985 Jag? The 85 XJ6 had wonderful lines but it had reached the end of it's road. The engine was cripped by emissions and an old 3 speed auto. I remember 0 to 60 times in the 11 second reange.

Todays Jaguars may not have the classic lines of the originals but they drive far better.

I would choose an XF over any of it's German competition.

I love comments like this. Spending hypthetical money.
In the real world, people with real money are buying BMWs, Benzs, Audis. Not Jaguars.
There's a reason for that.

At first glance I liked it, and at second glance I saw the same thing. I'm not sure how it all averages out.

I could afford to buy any of those cars, I choose instead to spend money on my family, house and a life.

Same reason people buy Camrys and Accords. No imagination, eveyone else buys them so they do too.

Exactly. So you're not remotely in the market.
By the way, I mean this most respectfully. You have your priorities right.
For others the German cars appeal because you can see the style lineage in them. They're instantly recognisable for what they are. Not to mention performance lineage. But the Jaguar is not remotely recognisable as a Jaguar. There is no generational styling continuity. It really does look like a Lexus GS.
This, unfortunately or not depending on your opinion, matters.

I have followed "Jaguar" like most since "we" saw the first XKE. I have owned five [no XKE] since. The last being a 1997, VDP extended version...the last of the 6's. I have yet to be as enamored with "Jaguar" since my last purchase. From then on, Jaguar has attempted to produce "work boots on wheels" or "old nurse's shoes" --styles in their dotage. Just awful! Stumpy, obese, cloddish, draft-like horses!

...with no sense of panache, unspoken eagerness, distinctiveness nor stylish elegance. And neither is there an ambiance of enthusiastic and assured vigour and liveliness.

May as well buy a Clydesdale!

Do you know that the price of this sport car is only $80,000? Do you know that this car is the best on the market right now?
Why?
Because of his performance, luxury, price, speed, and more…
