Camaro Daytona 500 pace car

With the 51st running of the Daytona 500 less than a week away, the gray and yellow 2010 Chevrolet Camaro pace car was on full display at the Florida track. It is, of course, an SS model with the 426 hp 6.2-liter V8.

Herewith, some pictures.

uh, could we finally release this thing for sale already? it's been tease, tease, tease for what, 3 years now?! by the time the car hits showrooms nobody will either want to buy, or be able to finance the thing!

It's GM, what do you expect? The same can be said for Volt as well. By the time either car hits the showrooms, it'll be irrelevant and all the excitement will be gone. I was hoping that by now, auto mags like InsideLine would do a comparison test between the Mustang, Challenger and Camaro but alas, with high gasoline price, who in their right mind would buy one of these modern recycled muscle cars? Another domestic car bites the dust..

I like the livery of the 1993 Indy 500 Camaro Pace Car better.

I actually think it'd be cooler if GM used a Corvette ZR1 as the pace car. It looked like a Z06 (or ZR1?) was used to pace last Saturday's Budweiser Shootout. Since the Cup cars have restrictor plates , the ZR1 would probably be faster than them, especially if it was shod with slicks.

Oh here we go again - "With gas going up no one will buy these things blah blah blah" why is it that people think the only performance cars that will do poorly with high gas prices are American cars? Why does no one decry Mazda or Nissan, even though their RX-8 and 370Z get similar or worse mileage? Just more mindless American bashing. I'm in my right mind and I'm buying one. Of course I don't drive by myself to work, but who in their right mind would do that?

And as for the length of time it takes to get to market, again, this is only a complaint leveled at American manufacturers. The Acura and Lexus supercars were teased for how many years before being dropped? How long did we see GT-R pictures for? Face it - any interesting car will have spy shots taken during its development and lots of stories on it. Cars take years to develop, but for some reason it is only acceptable for non-American cars to be developed over time? You'd think people would be happy time was taken to get it done right. Of course, for some people, they just have to complain about American companies doing it wrong, no matter what they do.

Import fanboys are really getting annoying.

In addition - the Camaro gets better gas mileage than the STI and Evo, but no one thinks those are doomed. How do you people not see your absurd biases?

I see they finally came out with some realistic engine specs instead of the impossible preliminary values they had published.

Greenpony, what are you talking about? The engine was originally rated at 422 and now it is rated at 426? Nothing impossible or unrealistic there.
