Chris Bangle, the Ohio-born, beard-sportin' Chief of Design at BMW, has resigned according to a report in Automotive News. Mr. Bangle is widely known for controversial designs that he labeled progressive and revolutionary. Others often used labels like ugly and misshapen.

According to the report, Bangle is leaving to pursue interests outside the automotive industry. Adrian van Hooydonk, the current number two in BMW's design department, will succeed Bangle.

Damn good riddance. I never thought a car could look like a donkey's ass until he showed up.

I haven't understood Bangle's "evolution" at all. I'm not really an art guy, but I think I understand design evolution. Banglism is beyond me, though.

Which vehicles did he design? 09 BMWs look better than ever! M3 is gorgeous. Mini.. also perfect.

I think the 2002 7-series and the 2004 5-series were the first under his tenure, although I don't know the degree to which they are solely his designs. Regardless, these are the modern BMWs that I find least attractive.

I think the 3-series styling that debuted in 2006 and 2007 was toned down from the full treatment so as not to turn off too many buyers, since the 3 is BMW's volume seller. So the 3 sedan isn't quite as bad, but I still think the 3 coupe looks the best of all and the only one I'd consider to be reasonably good looking. And I think the 1's styling is not too bad, but not great either.

And during his reign over design, BMW's sales increased, so apparently the anti-Bangle styling sentiment wasn't shared by most BMW buyers.

I think buy BMW's in spite of how they look, not because of how they look.

Imagine how many they would sell if you didn't always feel you have to apologise for the looks of the car everytime you talk to someone.

"Yeah, I know the 1 (or 3 or 5) series is ugly but you should see how great it drives"

Wow, Bangle has been head of BMW design since 1992? That means some better designs came out under his tenure as well, such as the aforementioned 3, 5, and 7 series of the previous generation.
