2009 Geneva Auto Show: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

eclasscoupe-pro-750.jpg

Mercedes-Benz hasn't been good with names for quite some time now. The current CLK has little in common with the CL flagship and shares even less with the SLK roadster. In an attempt to restore some order, the CLK will be replaced this summer with the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe.

As you might have guessed from the new less-confusing nomenclature, this is a two-door version of the E-Class sedan introduced at the Detroit Auto Show. Slippery new bodywork not only gives it a unique look, it also gives the new coupe a drag coefficient of .24, the lowest of any production car in the world.

When it goes on sale this June, the E-Class Coupe will get the same engine lineup as the sedan. Base models get the 3.5-liter, 268-hp V6 while the E550 Coupe will have 382-hp thanks to a 5.4-liter V8.

Nice, but the rear end looks like it was plucked off a Maxima.

This looks good.
The CL was too round, looked like a porpoise.

GORGEOUS!
The swoosh on the rear hunches makes sense here. It definitely doesn't on the sedan.

Any word on pricing? The CLK was cheaper than the E. I can't imagine that continuing...

Good observation. Today's CLK starts at $48,100, $5,100 less than the E. Judging by how other manufacturers do it, I'd expect the new E sedan to start north of $54000.

For comparison, a 650i starts at $78,200. Though i'm not sure whether the 6 or the 3 coupe would be its prime competitor. Or an A/S5 for that matter.

I really like the current Mercedes exterior design language as the S, C and this new E coupe look great, however their interior designs of late are too cold and too angular.

THAT is what the 4 door should look like.

Me. Have you guys seen the next gen version?! The C-class looks better than this.

Count me as one of the people who isn't a fan of the new E-Class sedan but loves the coupe. I think I am in the minority in loving the new interior design language though. It is a throwback to the '80's and '90's when Mercedes weren't about style but substance. I always liked the blocky interior because it was distinctly Benz. Hopefully the quality will also be a throwback to the '80's and '90's.
