Nicolas Cage's 1970 Hemi 'Cuda Hitting the Auction Block at Russo and Steele

Here we have that scary blend of the words "hemi", "cuda" and "celebrity" all rolled into one. We're talking Nicolas Cage here, so it's reasonable to assume that although any 1970 Hemi 'Cuda hardtop is already a highly sought after auction prize, this one has that little extra ounce of wall-opening leverage.

We've always been skeptical of the "added value" that celebrity ownership brings to cars at auctions. More often than not, the people who find value in such connections are not the kind of people who find value in driving a one-of-a-kind muscle car. They're in it for the show and not much more.

Of course, that doesn't mean we won't be glued to our televisions watching the nearly endless coverage of the various Arizona-based auctions immediately following the Detroit Auto Show. Heck, watching people pay stupid money for cars that aren't worth it is half the fun. Then again, this year, the stupidity might be down a bit. Just a bit.

Part of me is grateful to collectors who pay stupid money for numbers-matching cars owned by celebrities, because the cars are beauties to behold, and ensures they will stick around. However, there is little chance any of us will see this romp the pavement. A car should be driven, and this phenomenon nearly reduces classic cars to Beannie Babies and Cherished Teddies.
