Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Coming to the U.S. for 2010

Mitsubishi's U.S. baby got Sportback. It's true. Despite the U.S. market's historic disinterest in five-door hatchbacks, Mitsubishi will begin importing the Sportback this summer as a 2010 model.

It'll be available in commuter-car GTS and sporty Ralliart flavors. Either way, it'll offer a maximum of 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

Lest there be any confusion, the production Lancer Sportback is on the right in the above photo.

It's smart looking - I'm glad it's headed over as an attractive option.

Good job Mitsu for making it and bringing it State-side. We need more hatchbacks here. Its just a great big "sigh" in the styling department though.

Much better than the last generation square-back thing.

Looks cool but I bet it has half the seat up cargo space of the square back version.

Looks like rear seat headroom will be compromised too.

A couple of years ago Mitsu said they would offer clean diesel in Lancer by 2010. Where is the clean diesel?

Give the Ralliart better tires and a more competitive price, and I'll be really, really interested.

I don't think the American market has been nearly as resistant to hatchbacks as people say. I see far more 5 door Mazda3s than Mazda3 sedans, for just one example. With gas prices inevitably going up again, this is a well-timed move.

moparbad, diesel is dead for us.

I love hatches but I hate how they chopped the back end of this car. Not impressed (in photos anyways).

The Ralliart is on the longer version of my shortlist and the choice between sedan and hatch will be agonizing. The sedan looks great but the hatch is more practical (for me, realizing the seats up cargo volume may actually be lower). What I am suggesting is the hatch looks totally lame in comparison. Maybe it will be better in the flesh.
