2009 Detroit Auto Show: Subaru Legacy Concept

subaru-legacy-555.jpg

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Legacy sedan this year, Subaru offered a glimpse of the car's future with the new Legacy Concept.

Like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6, the next Legacy is going to be considerably larger than the current model. The concept rides on a 108.3-inch wheelbase, stretched from 105.1 inches. It has also grown approximately 3 inches in overall length, width and height.

Designed as a four-passenger sedan, the Legacy Concept uses Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system mated to a 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine.

This Subaru has officially moved from funky to chunky. -- Kelly Toepke, News Editor

It seems as if the designs foundation is good but the details are way overstyled. And yes....I know its a concept.

Wow. This is, hands down, the ugliest car I have seen in a long time. The slab sides and high roof make it look like an economy car...except I'm struggling to think of an economy car that combines a frumpy shape with such a hideous mug. Subaru really has lost its way lately.

Wow, even Subaru is out of touch with reality.

Actually, I bet this car wouldn't look too bad once it gets normal chrome headlights and normal bodykit freeness.
But this concept is really botched looking.

The way people like to bash Subaru styling is funny to me. This car has a lot of the styling that people like, chunk, substantial, Toyota-like. Funny how Toyota owns part of Subaru now...... I don't mind it, but it doesn't look ground-breaking or greatly different, the way Subaru people at the Lafayette plant said the 2010 would be.

What I don't like is how Subarus seem to be getting bigger, just when the trend is to more efficient, smaller cars. Are they missing the styling mark again?

I love that Subaru's are affordable, fuel efficient, AWD vehicle. I'm on my 2nd Legacy and have been eagerly awaiting the new 2010's. Not only do I like the new look, I am excited that the 2010's are a bit larger. In my 2006, a rear-facing car seat does not leave enough leg space for the front seat passenger, and the trunk can only fit my travel system stroller. Can't wait until these cars make it to the dealership!
