2009 Detroit Auto Show: North American Car of the Year Is...

Genesis-2.jpg

...the Hyundai Genesis. #DAS09 Yeah, we were surprised, too. Although this NACOTY juror thinks the Genesis is well deserving of the honor, the consensus has been that the Ford Flex would pull it out thanks to the number of Detroit-based journalists on the voting jury. Maybe the auto press isn't as predictable as the world thinks we are.

Still, it was close. The Genesis won with 189 points, only nine more than the Ford. The Jetta TDI was a distant 3rd place with just 131 points.

Congratulations, Hyundai.--Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief

Didn't the Aura win this last year? Fat lot of good it did Saturn.

brn I believe the Aura won it in 2007, while the Malibu won last year.

Congrats Hyundai on the win and to Ford for the close second. Both strong and deserving entries.

Ive sat in 2 different Genesis' and found the craftsmanship and material quality to be first rate. Nice weighty doors and fit n finish. Congrats Hyundai!

So far they have been:

90% never owned a Hyundai before. 40% traded in a Lexus, M-B, BMW, or Porsche. So it's certainly not bombing.

Am I the only one who still gets disgruntled when I hear someone refer to the Flex as a "car"?

It's a wagon. Are wagons cars?
