2009 Detroit Auto Show: 2010 Cadillac SRX

2010-cadillac-srx-555.jpg

We can't say this is the future we envisioned for the 2010 Cadillac SRX. Set for an introduction at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, this new, smaller SRX is squeezing Cadillac into the compact luxury SUV segment currently occupied by the likes of the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLK and soon-to-be-released Audi Q5.

It's a promising category with a good business case, but the fact that the current SRX never caught on is a shame. It was one of GM's best vehicles - a solid rear-wheel drive chassis, plenty of passenger space, six- and -eight-cylinder engines, and a well-trimmed interior. The SRX's biggest deficiency was the fact that it looked like a tall wagon instead of a shrunken SUV, which of course is not really a deficiency at all depending on who you're asking.

I agree with you there. The SRX was a very sensible vehicle. It is a shame it didn't do well, but that also might be due to lack of marketing. I don't think many people were actually aware of it.

Luckily the new SRX looks like a fine vehicle as well.

The current SRX had plenty of TV marketing and mall placement.

The current SRX costs more than the Lexus RX, gets 13/20 mpg (!!!), and debuted years ago with the interior of a $15,000 car.
Now that the current SRX's interior is completely revised and is great is too late to save the terrible first impression.
GM has gotten over that terrible push-the-car-out-the-door and fix it on the fly each year strategy.

One of the most abominable creations of said strategy was the Chevy Equinox, with debuted with completely unpainted front and rear facias on all trim levels... what was GM thinking...

This new SRX is nice...

I have to disagree. I think the previous SRX looked better and looked more like a Cadillac. The SRX above looks a bit downmarket as it just isnt finished or executed like Cadillacs crown jewel, the CTS.

The fact that the new SRX shares its architecture with the Equinox makes me assume it wont be the "drivers CUV" the former SRX was. The former SRXs road manners was praised by numerous publications and was right there with the Germans (BMW X5 Sport) and Japanese (Acura MDX Sport) when it came to all around performance.

I seriously think Cadillac should have based the SRX off of the RWD CTS platform and finished/executed it like the CTS. Remember how beautiful the CTS SportWagon was, now look the picture above. If you dont see the difference in execution then you obviously dont get it.

In order for Cadillac to reinvent itself and remain consistent, they will have to maintain and update their product portfolio with vehicles that are true Cadillacs. The new SRX may be better in some ways but the former (in terms of driving dynamics) seems to be more in line with the performace/luxury image Cadillacs persuing.

The SRX above seems to be more of a Lexus RX competitor. If its sales Cadillac is after then I guess thats ok but I thought Cadillac wa trying to shed its Lexus like luxury image.

That 3.0L DI V6 looks interesting. GM is moving in the right direction.

No, thats what it SHOULD have looked like.

Not quite there yet, but it grows on me everyday. Right now, I think it looks pretty good. But will it be at X3 status when it finally comes to market? And say what you want about the old SRX, but it drove like nothing else. All of the magazines agree.

As good as this new SRX is in its own right, I feel that it's too much of a step down from the old model. The old SRX could compete head-to-head with the nicest luxury sport SUVs - X5 and Cayenne, while providing more space and a third row, even if sales never caught on. This new model clearly has no sporting pretensions, nor does it seem to bring something unique or extra functionality to the luxury SUV class. To me, it just seems like a (really good) RX350 wannabe.

true cadillacs? you mean big clumsy cars that don't handle and ride nicely on highways? The CTS is by far the best vehicle cadillac has, but it's only been around for several years - not enough to represent the entire brand.

I used "true Cadillacs" as a reference to where the brand is headed. The CTS, so I thought, was only the begining.

I say give the little guy a break. It's been said that this new SRX has good driving dynamics, and Cadillac knows they can't just rebadge a Chevy any more and get sales (with the exception of the Escalade). It has to perform at the top.

The way I see it, the CTS wagon is perfect for people like us who liked the old SRX. Sure it doesn't have the third row and isn't quite as big, but it drives well. This new SRX is for the average consumer who only knows these small/midsize crossovers are the new hot thing and would be great for replacing the Escalade they use to drive only themselves to work every day. Win-win-win all around.

I liked the old SRX so much more. I was always under the impression that the new SRX would have three rows and would be on the CTS platform while a smaller BRX would be created, which is essentially the vehicle above. It looks too chunky for me, almost like an Aztek.

I believe there's some incorrect information in the Edmunds' posts on the upcoming SRX- what I've read elsewhere says that it is NOT based on the same platform as the new Equinox. I've been reading that it's based on a hybrid of Theta II and Epsilon II platforms ('nox is Theta II?). Otherwise, I agree with pretty much everyone that preferred the current SRX's layout to the new design.

Everyone is talking about missing the third row. That third row was one of the worst. No one over 11 could comfortably use it, and it wasn't even split.
