2009 Callaway Corvette: ZR1 Performance for Z06 Money

Given the capabilities of the current Corvette lineup, there's not much room left for tuners to work. The base model is now a 430 horsepower monster, while the Z06 and ZR1 versions tack on 75 and 208 horsepower respectively. How much more do you need?

Then again, when did "need" ever really factor decisively into the purchase of a Corvette? Quite possibly never, but that has not deterred Reeves Callaway from continuing to sell his namesake Corvette that fits neatly between the Z06 and ZR1 in terms of horsepower and torque.

Of course, you have to start with your very own $48,500 base Corvette and then fork over another $18,500 to get the Callaway treatment. It adds a roots type Eaton/Magnuson supercharger along with larger fuel injectors, a new throttle body and revised exhaust. It's good for 580-horsepower and 518 pound-feet of torque according to Callaway. Suspension and brake upgrades are available as well.

It's also fully guaranteed and serviceable by a nationwide network of Chevrolet dealers. Oh, and you can start with a C6 coupe or convertible with a manual or automatic transmission. Not a bad alternative to the Z06 and far cheaper than the ZR1.

Good, they threw in proper seats as well. Sounds like a good deal.

But does the whole package work as well as a ZR1?

"How much more do you need?...when did "need" ever really factor decisively into the purchase of a Corvette"

That's easy. 1982 with 200hp.
