According to the UK's Car magazine, BMW will be dropping the M Division straight 6 engine. Widely regarded as one of the all-time great engines, it will be sorely missed. Car doesn't get into as to why this is occurring, but I'm sure it's emission and/or gas mileage related.
For lovers of Bimmer inline sixes, they will remain; just not in its most macho form.

it's not all that sad...we still get them. They just come with 2 turbos and have loads of more power, better reliability, and improved gas mileage.

That picture is exactly why I don't like engine to be encased in plastic shrouds.
No one could make a box that looks as good as that engine.
Perfect.

Ditto on the plastic shrouds - I like to see the engine when I raise the hood, instead of some silly cover seemingly used because it's cheaper than presenting the engine and its components in an appealing and organized way.

Boo!
This is another reason 2008 stunk.

What is the I-6 M engine used for currently? Does Europe have an M1 that I don't know about?

Yeah this seems like extremely old news to me?

Ahh...I actually read the full story, and apparently the Z4 was still using the E46 M3 motor until the 2009 model, which offers the 3.0 TT as the top motor.

No marcus. The N54 is *not* a twin-turbo S54. More like a twin-turbo M54.
Fail.
