Chrysler and Hyundai?

Chrysler Hyundai logos2 555.jpg

No sooner had news that GM and Chrysler had suspended merger talks, that a new story popped up over at Reuters suggesting that Hyundai and Chrysler might now be in discussions. If true, this once again raises the speculation that Chrysler divisions may be sold off separately. It's known that Hyundai is interested in the Jeep division; and possibly some, but maybe not all, other Chrysler divisions.

Full story here.

Makes so much more sense.

ya - but why would Hyundai want an inferior product line?? Not that long ago it would have been smart as Hyundai's weren't a whole lot better than the sheet metal they were stamped out of, but now given the choice I would buy an Entourage over a Caravan and a Genesis over a 300 and an Santa Fe over a Caliber and so on... The only thing Chrysler has that Hyundai doesn't have is the Jeep and trucks.

The Caravan/Town and Country are definitely nicer than the Entourage/Sedona which together I think sell less than 20000 a year. They could benefit hugely from having that, as the minivan market is still profitable for the insiders (Chrysler, Toyota, Honda).

Seems like a good combo if done right. Both companies are lacking what it takes to be at the top but perhaps togeather.

Hyundai lacks any really interesting products or any real identity or character (or any trucks).

Chryler lacks quality and the ability to recognize problems and correct them.

Worth thinking about.

You don't think the Genesis is an interesting product?

And when did Hell freeze over, albook? The Caravan and T&C are nicer than Hyundai/Kia's minivans? What do you consider nicer? Worse build quality and horrible reliability? The minivan market is imploding at a fantastic rate. Even Toyota and Honda are suffering from its collapse.

No I don't think the Genesis is an interesting product. Nor do I think they will sell many or will the model continue for more then a few years.

I'm sure it's a nice luxury sedan but even Lexus and Acura are struggling in this market and Hyundai lacks the their quality reputation or the prestige of the Germans.

The Caravan and T&C may or may not be more reliable then the Korean vans but they are nicer to drive.

For as long as the Genesis has been out, I've only seen one on the road... It was that pale shiny blue. It looked nice but not many people find it "normal" to drive a hyudai.

They already share the 2.4l engine so I see no problem with them merging. Together they could help fix each other's problems.

firstwagon,

If by nicer to drive, you mean the Caravan is faster with a better transmission, I'll buy it, but if you mean the actual ride is nicer, I'll assume you haven't taken a ride in either one.

"I'll assume you haven't taken a ride in either one."

Why? Because you don't agree with my opinion?

I have a friend with an Entourage that I car pool with sometimes. Nice van but nothing special really.

I've been in countless Caravans over the years including 2 of the new ones.( one base rental and a neighbours well equiped one).

If you ignore the creaks and cheap plastic, the Caravans are nicer to drive. By nicer I meaner overall impression, not any one feature.

If they kept only one van, I would keep the Caravan but use the interior by Hyundai.

I might let the Koreans assemble it too.

I agree about the ride. I spent a day in a 2008 Caravan and it was very comfortable to ride around in. I definitely felt better about Dodge, after having spent a day in the vehicle.

I'm afraid history will prove him right.

Hold on orangutan, "hell would freeze over" when a hyundai van outsells a Caravan. Have you ever been in one of these vans? The interior finished of the Caravan may not be as nice, but the build quality is just as nice. And the Town and Country's interior is on of the best on the market. Also, the Entourage has half the inovations of the Chrysler vans. Hyundai would benefit hugely from having this product, and it looks like they may get this chance.
And I'd buy a 300C years before I buy a Genesis if the interior quality was just as nice. HOwever, the Genesis is a great car that makes me believe one day Hyundai really could be on level with Lexus. And it's practically better than Acura right now.

Hyundai even has the Borrego, so they even have a truck frame now. This would have made a lot more sense before they built the Borrego.
