Only minor tweaks exist under the skin of the new Mazda3. But the new sedan -- despite being 3.3 inches longer -- looks more aggressive than the car it replaces. The big news is the car's styling. To our eyes the current sedan never looked as sharp as the five-door -- subtle differences to every panel added up to a much different-looking machine.
We have it on good authority the new sedan will share body panels forward of the A-pillar with the five-door, which should mean both cars look equally brawny. Here are a few of the new sedan's better angles.

I like the dual exhaust... Other than that, I'd take the outgoing model! Hopefully they fixed the A.C. issues with it being too weak and all.

Is that a brake duct over the fog light or just something for aesthetics? Perhaps Dan Edmunds (actualsize) could enlighten us.

Ugh...another dual exhaust, on an inline 4...
Regarding styling I would argue that while both lookers, the sedan is better looking. The young female motorists sporting it over the hatch have lead me to this conclusion. "It's cute!"

Ford uglified their mid-sized cars and Mazda went with the Jack Russel Terrier on caffeine look. New car sales are going to tank big time.

I think Mazda has done a great job redesigning the new 3. It's more aggresive and it will definitely stand out on the road. The dashboard of the car is 100 times better then the outgoing model. I think this car will defeat the honda civic in the compact class.

I have always loved the Mazda 3 sedans and with the new one my opinion hasn't change. Interior and outside looks good. Kind of suprised the WB and width didn't increase like all other cars have been. The only negative with this vehicle seems to be the front lower grill looks like a big open smiley face? Maybe to much black, need more body color. The front overhang seems to be rather large also, kind of like the newer Passats. Either way, improvements were made and it will top many list for compact car, including mine.

As the owner of two Mazda3s, I am horrified. This car is just plain ugly. They butchered an attractive small car for no reason whatsoever. What's with the rising character line and raised beltline? The car looks way too tall and stocky which was something I'd hope they could've fixed as the current sedan is a tad stodgy. The front end is just atrocious and the interior is much too busy. Why do they need all those buttons on the steering wheel?
The fuel economy of this car is a joke. 22/29? Why do the heavier upcoming Focus and '09 Mazda6 i get better EPA numbers while providing more power from the SAME engine? A 3400 lbs Chevy Malibu gets better fuel economy numbers as do the Sonata, Fusion, Accord and Camry. Looks like I just might keep my '07 GT hatch until the wheels fall off.

I'm with Chavis. Rising beltlines is another pet peeve of mine.

What an unfortunate redesign. I was thinking about trading in my SRT-4 for one of these, but definitely not anymore. The current one is so much better looking it's insane-- the MS3 being by far one of the best looking cars on the road under the $35K mark imo.

Mazda did an excellent job on this design! The car looks great and goes with the rest of Mazda's line up. I think that it will be a great car for Mazda.
