VW maybe thinking of a mid-engine sports car?

VWsportscarScoop260.jpg

There have been several stories coming out of Europe recently about Porsche offering a sports car under the Boxster (Porsche entry-level model rumors), a true entry-level model, so to speak. In doing so, Porsche would most likely do it in partnership with VW. They did this 30-plus years ago with the VW/Porsche 914.

Now we have a story from the UK's car magazine saying that VW is seriously considering a mid-engine sports car to take on the Lotus Elise. Now when you consider to those Porsche rumors, things are start to fall into place.

If this comes to pass, this sportster would likely hit the market around 2013.

Full story here.

Have you forgotten that you all wrote about VW showing a roadster concept @ LA next month? Gee, perhaps these two news items are connected...

Reminds me more of the MR-S than the MR-2. Not a good thing.

Finally a sporty vehicle from VW that isn't based on the Golf platform. GTI, A3, Scirocco, TT...all front engine FWD based.

They should move the Scirocco to that same platform while they're at it.

The next beetle too while they're at it and can keep the costs down enough.

Okay, this is cool stuff, but I have to admit to a certain concern I have about blurring brand distinctions.

If VW builds a 4 banger sports car using Porsche engineering and Porsche builds a Boxster with a VW-based four cylinder engine, when does a VW become a Porsche and vice versa? It's the same thing that bugged me about the entry level 914s...
