Michelle Krebs, the Grand Godess of AutoObserver. has really outdone herself here, with a really excellent report on what might happen if this GM-Chrysler deal comes to pass.
Also rather revealing, is the listing of the various Chrysler products and the vehicles that are cross-shopped against them. Good stuff!

Investors are not happy about this possibility. When the news broke earlier this week, shares dropped 6% just when folks didn't think the stock couldn't go any lower.
Boy, I would hate to have had my retirement tied into GM stock.

She well reinforces the fact that GM and Chrysler CAN'T HAPPEN. It would be essentially the same as GM sucking up Ford and it's countless overlapping models.
Let's just hope someone bails Chrysler out quick because I feel really bead for those who have their retirement in Chrysler. Of wait, Cerberus is private, nevermind.

If Chrysler was smart enough to merge with Nissan and sell the Chrysler brand as a introduction to luxury for people looking to buy a car for an economical reason that comes with luxury and comfort, safety, reliability. This will help Chrysler, You might ask Why? Well chrysler makes good rigid cars but engine and transmission performance is bad. Nissan on the other hand has good cars all around, but is known for engine and transmissons that last a long time. Why not take both companies and merge them, scale down their model line-ups and let Nissan concetrate on the engines and Transmissions , while chrysler makes a very rigid and safe body structure for the vehicle. So in the end we have a dodge Viper which would have a japanese engine with big muscle cylinders,a japanese transmission, and a nissan- chrysler infused design, but the body made rigidly strong in detroit. In the end Chrysler and Nissan will both end up winners for a long time to come.
GM should merge with Honda and Toyota and Suzuki and this will help GM come up with alternative ways to have a stable Market Ground world wide, especially in countries that have rugged terain and GM could emerge a Winner if these Companies form a joint partnership. If GM and Chrysler merge this will last for a short time and long term effects will hurt shareholders and investors around the world. I dont think people know but Honda makes a V6 Engine for the Saturn Vue in which GM provides parts to Honda in Europe. So these mergers would be a great thing to happen, just it has to be planned out and we need to have a good blueprint. Thanks for reading my comments.

What I think....
UAW must consider the purchase of Chrysler if they are to preserve jobs. Employee owned Chrysler is one of the very few scenarios where I see a chance of a future Chyrsler that is a full line manufacturer that is an American company.
Nissan-Renault-Chrysler actually makes more sense to me than any combination of Chrysler and GM.
Short term (6 to 18 months) I think they could continue to operate Chrysler as a separate unit and then either break it up or sell it.
Renault Logan could replace the Caliber. Offer the sedan, truck, and hatch/wagon versions and offer the diesel if the emissions can be met for the US.
Nissan could use it's Altima platform for a competent midsize for Chrysler.
Keep the Chrysler vans and Dodge Ram and sell versions of each at both Nissan and Chrysler dealers.
Rear wheel drive platforms could be shared between Infiniti and Chrysler for future vehicles to reduce costs.
Add a compact truck to Jeep (J8 in the short term), eliminate the Liberty, eliminate the Patriot, eliminate the Compass. Add a very capable, rugged, fuel efficient compact SUV (smaller version of Wrangler), replace the Liberty in the midsize role with something decent. Xterra and Pathfinder are better than current Liberty, what a shame!
Wrangler and Grand Cherokee can represent Jeep until vehicles worthy of the brand can replace the Caliber based Jeeps and the Liberty.
Replace Sprinter with US made Nissan commercial van. Dodge would be a good channel for Nissan's future commercial vehicle's that will be made in Mississipi.
What the heck would GM do with Chrysler?
Pontiac Charger
Pontiac Challenger
Buick 300
Buick Town and Country
Buick Journey
Chevrolet Caravan
Bundle Jeep vehicles with Hummer dealership channel and sell to a third party?
Sell Ram and tooling to Nissan. Rumor is that GM would keep Saltillo where the Ram is manufactured so where where would Nissan manufacture the Ram/Titan?
GM is ridiculous even thinking of becoming involved in the Chrysler mess.
I think UAW taking Chysler employee owned with a possible Cerberus equity state would be the best outcome.
