2008 Paris Auto Show: 2009 Mazda MX-5 Gets Minor Face-Lift

mazda-miata-f34-750.jpg

When it came time to update the 2009 Mazda MX-5, there wasn't much to do. It was recently redesigned and even then it was only a modest departure from the previous model. This time around the MX-5 gets a new grille, revised bumpers and reshaped side sills on the outside.

On the inside, the piano black trim has been changed to a dark silver color, while the climate controls get silver trim rings. Those with tender elbows will be glad to know that both the doors and center console were upgraded with softer armrests. There are improved electronic features as well like an auxiliary jack, a six-channel equalizer for the Bose audio system and optional Bluetooth connectivity.

The mechanical changes are similarly modest, all of them geared toward refining the driving experience. Peak horsepower now arrives at 7,000 rpm instead of 6,700 and the rev limiter moves to 7,500 rpm thanks to a new forged crankshaft, fully floating pistons and redesigned valve springs. Mazda's engineers also added a new Induction Sound Enhancer (ISE) to channel additional intake noise to the cockpit. There are minor suspension changes as well, like new front suspension knuckles and revised shock and spring tuning. -- Ed Hellwig, Lead Senior Editor, Inside Line

Holy cow, they're actually trying to create more noise in the cabin now? LOL, I love it! :)

The Miata was one of the funnest cars I have ever driven. Anyone been able to compare the folding hard top version to the soft top? Does it loose some of it's magic?

Does it gain any HP with the higher redline?

I drove the hard top and it feels pretty much the same as the soft top. You don't notice the extra 80 lbs or so.

I'm hoping they moved the bottle holder in the doors because that rubs annoyingly up against my left knee while driving.

I'd rather see that then softer elbow rests!

Any interior pics?
