Things just got a bit easier for New Yorkers who want to travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, as the state will offer a driver's license that will be RFID-embedded. This new license will substitute for a passport. Traveling to other international destinations will still require a passport, however.
This will be an option open to those living in New York, and there will (of course) be an additional $30 charge.

That's cheaper than a passport, I believe, so there isn't even a cost barrier if you only travel to those countries.

About time, passports are easy to fake and a pain.
At least this will be tough to copy and as a bonus it will get the paranoid and anti-goverment nuts all bent out of shape.
