GMinsidenews.com is reporting that the next-generation RWD Kappa platform has been axed. The reasons as you might well have guessed are uncertain gas prices, an uneasy economy, poor financial situation within the company and an overall product shake up.

I didn't realize these were loss leaders. No wonder they seemed like you get a lot for your buck.

When I went down to TX last week, I saw a lot of these on the road.

The coupe just came out, at least give it a chance. Plus they never built the Chevy Nomad.
This surprises me because the twins outsell the Miata, GM makes a big deal about that, yet Mazda keeps the Miata chugging along.

It's because GM doesn't know what the hell it's doing. The company might as well be eight headless chickens running around right now.

shame to see this being canceled. I like the idea and look of the solstice/sky, but their interiors make me want to die. A model refresh could have fixed this.

How GM can lose ten grand on each of these vehicles is beyond me. Demand exceeded all expectations. The Mazda Miata which is a vastly superior vehicle makes money and has been in production with huge improvements for almost 20 years. What gives with GM? Needless to say, they need new management.

Re: Kappa vs. Miata - Maybe the Miata sells well outside the U.S. but Solstice/Sky doesn't. Does anyone have any numbers?

hydroformed and hand built?
Well which smartass executive decided these cars needed to be hydroformed and hand built? Because it's COOOOOOL???
Mazda probably just uses a good old press to make their parts.

Edmunds, please fix the error that tells us we're signed in but then deletes our comments because we really weren't. I'm tired of retyping everything.
+100 to Karjunkie. Its bad enough to lose money on a car that is selling twice as well as its competition (though I blame some of that on the UAW). Using high gas prices as an excuse? Please. This is a small, 4-cylinder powered roadster with mileage in the high 20s. GM needs to understand that RWD does not necessarily mean poor fuel economy. This is an incompetency that knows no bounds. With so many other American businesses operating just like GM, it's no wonder our economy is shot and other countries are tired of taking our money.

Forgot to add:
This is especially disappointing because these cars had so much potential. They looked great. All they needed were some higher quality interiors and better handling, steering, etc. With the new interiors coming out of GM and the rave reviews cars like the G8 are getting for their handling, I was confident the next gen Kappas would be fully competitive with the MX-5. Detroit used to be a leader in making lust-worthy, exciting cars. Now they can only get halfway there before they shut it down to build another overweight bland-tastic CUV.

I remember when it first came out I was hoping it wouldn't be another Fiero.
Looks like it is. Another good idea done poorly.
