We get the Tacoma pickup, and the rest of the world gets the HiLux pickup. Years back, as in decades back, the Toyota pickup sold here was also called the HiLux.
Moving forward... I don't know about the rest of you folks, but I find the styling of this HiLux soooo much more appealing than the Tacoma. Also very appealing is that the HiLux can be had with a 171 hp 3.0L 4-cylinder diesel.

Not bad. I wouldn't mind having one.

It's certainly better than the Tundra's styling. I don't find the Tacoma to be particularly cartoonish...yet. This does look better, though.

They sell those in Brazil, Bob. They look even better in person. Very sharp.

If I was in the market for a pick up, this would be my choice, no question about it. Not only is it styled right (tough, but understated) but it has surpassed a few really hard tests (look up top gear killng a hilux in youtube).
Here in MX we get the gas versions (sold more as a workhorse, while the Tacoma is only sold for high end). I can't wait to see if the Diesel versions pop up around here.

I can tell all of you from my experience.... I have business in Panama and last week I bought a brand new Toyota Hi-Lux and drove it the 4,000 miles to arizona... It took 7 days, and driving through a river in El Salvador to get here...If you want to know the rest of the story email me.... By getting between 35 and 40 miles a gallon it is easy to see why GM and Ford don't want them here.......You would not believe the reaction of every one, including locat Toyota Dealers..... If you want one I can tell you how to make it happen..... and you to can get your 3.0 four cyl, 4x4 with automatic transmission... Thanks

I am very interested in purchasing the 09 Hilux Euro Spec. I wrote Toyota and they said there was no plans to bring the Hilux to America. I was curious as to whether I could buy one in Great Britian and ship it here, but the cost is prohibitive. Wasn't aware it was available in Central America. Is this the same model as the Euro Spec? Also, are you able to get parts for it here in the states?

Legrande,
I think there are several of us who are curious as to how we can purchase a Hilux and bring/ship it back to the U.S. It must be difficult or more people would be doing it.
P.S. Need your email address.

Toyota already makes a diesel version of the Tacoma (known as the Hilux). The Hilux offers two turbocharged diesel engine options. These vehicles get 30-35 mpg, can tow 5,000lbs., and will last 300,000+ miles. If you want it in the U.S., then go to the Toyota website and contact them, via email, and request it. Let them know you want the Hilux (with the diesel option) available in the U.S. as soon as possible. I contacted Toyota and they said they are considering bringing the Hilux to the U.S., but were gauging customer demand. Each customer's request is given a file number and is cataloged. When enough people demand the Hilux in the U.S., they will make it available. So now is the time to let them know what you think!
P.S. Just google "2009 Toyota Hilux Euro Spec" if you want to see the Hilux already available in Europe. The Hilux is a far superior vehicle than the Tacoma we are stuck with in the U.S.
