VW fans won't be shocked at the new images of the next-generation Golf, which was to be introduced later this week; but then again, best laid plans are foiled thanks to the Internet... The new model, as usual, follows the long-established VW Golf overall look, with a hint of the new Scirocco up front.

The new model is said be larger than the outgoing model. Gas engines should include a 1.4L TSI and a 1.8L TFSI (perhaps even the 2.0L TFSI?). On the diesel front, expect 1.9L and 2.0L TDI versions. A manual, automatic and DSG transmission are also expected.

Can anyone explain how this improves over the last model? Is it just me or Volkswagen just melted Mark 4 and Mark 5 to create Mark 6 to pretend this indeed is the new car?

I see a mark 4.5 also. Looks like a step back.

Like the current front but I like the new rear.

I will say that I love how VW finishes their cars. That GTi I drove a few months ago was a very solid car, actually above my expectations.

current production costs are too high so they changed the styling to make it cheaper and faster to make. not exactly an upgrade in my opinion. i'm happy with my mkV GTI.

it looks nice and reserve judgement till I see it in the flesh. Front looks much better than the current Rabbit. It looks slightly more sporty than the current shape.

I hope they keep the Mk V GTI's blackout grille

I like the MkV better... I'd love to get a rabbit with leatherette, trip computer, alloy rims, and a sunroof...Preferably panoramic! Sadly, VW doesn't allow leatherette in a rabbit. That alone is a big put down.

That rear end would go nice on the current car. From the japaneese-style circles to the germanic straight lines.

I wonder if there will be a new, new beetle (Just Beetle Please!) with conertible option or a return to the VW Cabrio?

Yawn. I see a Mark 4.2. I'm surprised with the way Volkswagen forgets that they are the "people's car" that this thing isn't priced in the $30K range. You can only blame the strong Euro so far...

Those engine choices are the Euro choices, although I'd love to get my hands on the 1.4L Twin-Charger in the Euro Tiguan. Now THAT is an amazing piece of engineering....

There's a lot of current Passat in the side features of this new Rabbit, but I like the MkV's overall styling better.

Off topic, but is it just me or does anyone else see the impending cannibalism for the Scirroco and Rabbit? It certainly wouldn't be the first time VW/Audi did this....

Ok Im a bit lost here. Is this a completely new Golf/GTi or a refreshed version of the current?
The current model isnt at all old as it debuted as a late 2006 model.
