Bits-and-pieces in and about the auto scene

Here are a few interesting news items from the outer limits of the automotive world:

The flying car returns

It seems about once a decade there are reports about flying cars, and here we have one once again. So has technology advanced far enough so that this idea can finally get off the ground?

Siberia to Alaska by car

Who needs a bridge or tunnel to span the world's oceans, when you can drive across them. That what Steve Burgess did with his Land Rover. Actually Burgess drove across the Bering Strait, which is one of the world's nastiest bodies of water.

Solar car in Alaska

Okay, another Alaska story... I bet solar cars are not a daily occurrence to folks who live in our northernmost state.

The international crew of the Power of One solar car project stopped over in Anchorage; a  trip that started out of Buffalo, New York in June.

"We have been stopped by police in Alaska three times," said team member Marcelo Daluz. "One of the times there was a 911 call about a UFO on the road, so the police pulled us over to investigate, to see the alien. So as soon as he opened the hatch I said, 'Take me to your leader.'"

I don't see the appeal of flying cars, except in very limited applications. Flying is dangerous, made safe only by strict training and discipline. Who wants traffic jams above our heads with districted pilots jabbering on cell phones?
