Great news for hybrid fans, as Toyota is going to up production of the popular Prius by 70 percent next year. In 2007 Toyota produced 281,300 Prius vehicles, and that will now increase to about 480,000 vehicles.
In doing so, those looking to buy one, will likely not have to endue long waits, and if they're lucky, maybe even be able to negotiate a deal...

Every hybrid manufacturer complains of a battery shortage. Where is Toyota going to get parts for a 70% increase in production?

Denso provides the batteries for the Prius. Being a very large company, I'm sure Denso can support the extra capacity. Besides, I imagine Toyota has been planning to increase Prius production for some time.
This is good news no matter how you feel about the Prius. America is well on its way toward oil independence.

Esterka,
I'm not so sure. Toyota's Prius sales are down and they're blaming the inability to get batteries. It seems to me that Denso cannot support the current capacity, much less an increased capacity.

My father who is a product planner for Toyota told me that the increased manufacturing of the Prius will replace the Solara at the Toyota plant in Georgetown, Ky...about 20 minutes from me.
For those who are doubting the Prius as a long term vehicle my fathers company car is a last generation Prius (2003 I believe) and it has over 150K on it. His daily commute is around 160 miles.
