The 2009 BMW 335d was announced at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, so the fact that our spies caught a nearly undisguised prototype testing in Death Valley was no surprise. Set for a fall debut, the 335d will not only showcase BMW's latest diesel technology, it will arrive wearing slightly revised bodywork as well. In fact, all 2009 BMW 3 Series models will get a mid-cycle refresh this fall which will include revised front and rear fascias and modestly upgraded interiors. Although the success of the 3 Series as a model line is virtually guaranteed, the 335d may have a tough time finding traction given the price of diesel fuel. We'll see in a matter of months.

I don't dig BMW styling, but I guess this looks better? I honestly haven't developed an opinion, yet.

IMO the whole point about buynig diesel cars is to get terrific fuel economy. I'm sure this BMW will, but I think 265hp and 400lbft torque is just overkill. This car will still be plenty fast with 220hp and, say, 350lbft (!) but the benefit would be even better mpg.
If I was in the market (which I very well could be), I would definitely pick less hp and more mpg for the diesel. That would also help offset the higher cost of diesel fuel as well as the harder to find issue.

It'll sell fine in so cal. Premium's only 20-30 cents cheaper but premium cars get 30% lower fuel economy. A less than 10% price premium at the pump but fewer stops and 30% better economy = easy sale.
