Ford's next Fiesta, Fusion and Ka

Ford's next US-spec Fiesta (a model name not used here since 1981) is going to be built in Mexico. The Fiesta will be built in a plant that used to build F-Series trucks. It will be available as both a sedan and hatchback, and will arrive as a 2010 model.

Here's AutoObserver's take: Ford Builds Fiesta Sedan, Hatchback in Mexico

It looks like the next Ford Fusion will be getting a smiley face, sort of...
Actually it looks like Ford left this plastic grille out in the hot sun a bit too long, as it appears to have melted.

Frankly I find this to be a rather odd shift in Ford's corporate grille stying. While this image is lacking the Ford blue oval logo, I doubt if it will improve the looks any. We should be seeing the car here in either 2010 or 2011.

Let's not forget the European Ford Ka, as it's due for a makeover as well. Due to be introduced at the next Paris Auto Show, the Ka shares its underpinnings with the Fiat 500. It will be built in Fiat's Poish factory, and should hit dealers by the end of 2008. AutoExpress is also reporting that a hybrid version could be in the works.

Just skip the Fusion refresh and give us the Mondeo. And no slapping those stupid bars on its nose because Americans want "bold designs!"

Is America finally getting the KA after all these years?

That new Fiesta looks sharp, better than our current Focus by far.

+1 ateixeira.

Its great looking in its hatch version especially.

Has anyone got an idea of what engine they'll putting in it?

crowb,

I think it'll be the 1.5L that's in the Mazda2:

This carscoop article says it produces 103hp, but I'm pretty sure that when the new 2 was released that I heard a figure of about 115hp. Someone else may be able to confirm this.

I much prefer Ford Europe's designs over its US cars. They are handsome but a little boring and plain/unrefined. If Ford wants to keep Mercury, maybe it can sell re-badged Euro-Fords a la the new Saturns.

m_thrizzle,

Yeah, a bunch of us have been saying the same thing for the past few months. We, as enthusiasts, can only hope Ford is that intelligent! Better than letting a nameplate with the history of Mercury die like an old dog.

Ford should have already had these cars available here years ago.

Thanks, flicmod. I read some speculation somewhere else that they may opt for a 1.8 liter engine.

I'd like to see them do a sporty version of the 3-door Fiesta. There's a lot of potential there from the way the car looks. If they could give it some good performance, maybe one of the new ecoboost engines Ford is working on, then they could have a serious little fast car. I'm thinking along the lines of Mini Cooper S.

I can't wait to read the first full review of this machine.

Sure thing crowb. I think I remember hearing something about a 1.8L as well.

I agree about some kind of Cooper S competition. Are the future ecoboost engines supposed to be 4-cyl as well? I was under the impression that they were solely 6-cyl twin turbo's.

I was about to correct your statement about the Fiesta being absent since '81, but then I remembered I was thinking of the Festiva. I imagine some other shoppers will make the same connection.

In any case, the Fiesta is a much better car.

estreka,

It's funny because I made the same mistake. Who's idea was it at Ford to name two subcompact cars with similar names...

I really like that Fiesta. Too bad they said they are not bringing the diesel model, which is stupid on their part. This Fiesta is much more stylish than the hideous chrome trimmed US Focus. Is ford finally catching on? Now if they would only bring the Focus RS or at least bring that European styling to the US Focus they might just start selling more cars.
