In the hands of General Motors development engineer Jim Mero, a new Corvette ZR1 posted a scorching 7:26.4 lap at the Nürburgring, which beats the Nissan GT-R's 7:29 lap record. The Vette was stock except for communication and safety equipment. It was wearing Michelin Pilot Sport 2’s, which is also the stock tire.
Stay tuned folks, I bet this 'Ring-Thing is not over yet...

Hmm...PS2's vs Run-Flats, 140hp difference, $35k price differential (not including dealer markups/overcharging), and oh yeah - the V-Spec GT-R prototype is still faster.

Even if the V- Spec GT-R is faster, this is very impressive and did this with RWD
So is this the official record?

There are always haters. Congrats to GM- at least for now.

Congrats Chevy!
I never thought there would be a "Ring War". This should be a very interesting bout between the GT-R, ZR-1, LF-A and the NSX sucessor. Im really hoping Acura will offer a really hard core version also (Type R).

The beauty of the ZR1 is that it'll ride better than any of the competition on regular roads. It'll ride better than the Z06 while still being faster around a road course. How can you mad at that?
The Spec V GT-R is at least 2-3 years away, Nissan said it themselves. They said they want to wait until interest on the standard version wanes before introducing the higher performance variant.

The Vette's lap time was achieved from a rolling start, not a standing start. Is that the same for the Nissan?

@desmo
The article says that it is standard industry practice to use a rolling start so we can assume so

Corvette, Cadillac CTS, Acadia and clones.... GM seems to be a roll lately.
Will Ford and Chrysler wake up and take notice?

As much as I love GM, I can't wait for the next supercar to come down the line and throw down an even better time. I'll probably never own any of these cars, but I can still lust over them.

Great job by GM no doubt.
IMO 7,26 its FAST,but NOT FAST ENOUGH to justify the price (100 plus grand)for a factory CORVETTE,the z06 its a wise buy for a super sport but the zr1 is over priced for what offers, its only 3 secs faster then the STANDARD gtr(30 grand cheaper),and the style GM choosed for this car its a little doubtful.
A TRANSPARENT WINDOW SCOOP IN THE BONNET?? GIGANTIC CROM WEELS?WHO DESIGNED THIS CAR CHIP FOOSE???
For me a Z06 anitime ,the zr1 is only for those with to much money wanting to show of they have the expensive corvette in the garage.
Again as a performance exercize, good job GM and congrats.

R33 the price is mainly for the exclusivity. And comparing the MSRP of the ZR1 with the GTR is a little pointless since dealer markups will make up the majority of what you pay and can vary wildly.

Congrats to Chevy, at least for the time being.
One thing bothers me though. A few weeks ago, the GT-R's standing start had everyone crying foul - then the ZR1 does it and it's suddenly industry standard...

The'Ring is about bragging rights. It's not about almost as fast but costs less.
So what if the GTR is cheaper. It's slower. By 3 seconds a lap.

Mazdaspeed_jon, even now (Feb 21, 2009) you can't find a GT-R for under $94,000 with the dealer mark-up's, the ZR1 has had zero mark-ups like Nissan has and have been right at $108,000 to $115,000 depending on your options ($7,000 Leather Interior?)
Also, the Nurburgring time of 7:29 was done by the Nissan factory with their own driver, while many tests since then by magazines from all over the world and other manufacturers with their own professional drivers have not come close to that time! The best of the bunch was a 7:54 time by the Porsche factory!
What I keep hearing is that the original time of 7:29 was actually a GT-R Spec-V and not the standard GT-R! The reason is because of the unofficial times for Spec-V's recently around the Ring have only been 2 to 3 seconds faster than that 7:29 of the original GT-R! Oh, and the price for the GT-R Spec-V is over $150,000 USD. WOW!
Desmolicious, all the runs are "Flying starts"
One other thing. If you look at all of the Porsche times around the Ring, the distance Porsche runs it's cars is 350ft shorter than a lot of the other manufacturers! These manufacturers run a distance of 68,350' (20,832m) Cadillac, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ferrari, Ford, Lexus, Maserati, Nissan, Pagani. While Porsche, BMW, Bugatti, Koenigsegg, Lamborghini, Mercedes and Ruf run the shorter 68,000' (20,600m)
What Porsche and the others do is start at a different point past the final turn, but have their finish line right before that turn 350ft shorter than the other manufacturers! Don't know why more people don't recognize this when quoting their times! I would think at least 2 seconds maybe 3 added to their times, it's 350' of a turn which you had to decelerate before entering losing all your momentum and then keep your speed down until the exit and it's not 350' in a straight line at speed!

evey time I take my 8 year old Z06 out to Pacific Raceways and go down the forested curves of Frog Hollow, I like to pretend I'm a the Green Hell! If only for a few seconds.
