2009 Yamaha V-Max rumored to do a sub-10 second quarter mile

Wimps need not apply...

Picture a two-wheeler with an 1800cc V4 putting out 210 horsepower. That what Yamaha has in store with their 2009 V-Max. Rumored to be the quickest accelerating motorcycle to date, the V-Max may well crack the 10-second barrier in the quarter mile...

Yeahh!! With that power you better put a "concrete bag" to keep the front end from coming up.

Seriously, I hope it comes with some sort of launch control...

That's a fantastic looking bike. Excellent cross between a cruiser and a sport bike.

This report is so full of inaccuracies.
First off, all the top tier sport bikes from Ducati, MV Agusta, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha are pulling 1/4 mile times in the sub 10's and over 145mph trap speeds.
Secondly, this Yam is actually a 1679cc bike, not 1800. It will make 197hp at the crank (not as printed 210hp), which with it's shaft drive and associated parasitic losses will lose about 15-20% by the time it hits the rear wheel. So it will put down about 160-170hp.
Bikes like the Busa and Zx14 are already doing that and more.
Here's the killer, while all the top level sportbikes that are running 1/4 miles in the 9s weigh in the 420-440lbs wet range, the Vmax weighs in 200lbs hevier at 645 wet.
Bottom line, the Vmax, while faster than any of the Harleys and Harley copies will get spanked by any of the top tier sport bikes.

Alright, this story has been up for days now and is inaccurate. Why no fixes to it?

You bring up some good points, but you are forgetting the V-max has 166 Ft-LBs of torque (campared to around 100 for the Hayabusa) which should make up for the heavier weight. Yamaha knows what the Hayabusa and ZX-14 are capable of, so they must know something we don't if they are claiming the new king of the dragstrip like I saw in one of thier promo videos. That new max will blow the inline 4 cylinders away in the 0 to 60 times (maybe thats why they can say "fastest accelerating bike made"), but I'm sure the Hayabusa and ZX14 will have have much higher top speed and could even be faster in the quater mile. Time will tell.
