Long-Term Test: 2008 BMW 135i - Introduction

2008 BMW 135i

We've added a metallic red BMW 135i to our long-term fleet.

It has a 300-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

It's going to be a fun year.

What do you think about the new BMW 1 Series?

I'm sure it will be a great car to drive.

I just wish it were cheaper... and lighter... and better looking. (inside looks nice though)

128i would be the 1 I'd like to see a long term test of.
Everybody is testing the 135i.

Summation of the yearlong test:
"Handles great...but so does the 335i"
"All that BMW finesse wrapped in a slightly smaller package"
"Fantastic. I am so ready for the M1"
"Where's the hatch version?!"
"grumble grumble...taillights...grumble"
"This is the car for you if you don't want to look like everyone else but still kinda do"
"It's cars like these that make me remember the e36"

Next a long term Tiguan(that isn't the S)!!?

I personally don't like the 1. I see no need for it. Its everything just barely under the 3series... I think at least the hatch could have came to make it a standout and to run with the Audi A3/VW GTI

I still have trouble trying to figure out why bmw doesnt bring its 2.5si engine to the US along with the diesels.

The 2.5si replaced the 2.5 and still costs less than the 3.0. Sure it isn'tas fast but it gets good mpg and the car(s) as a whole will be cheaper. Call it the new 123(5)i, 323(5)i, z4 2.5si, and X3 2.5si.

I'm having trouble understanding bmw... Just look at the X6...

I'm waiting for the claims that only the sport suspensioned BMWs handle well...

If I was single with no kids Id have the 135i or the 335i coupe.

Saucy color selection! If it's more fun than the 335i, that should more than make up for it's dull exterior. I hope these depreciate quickly, 'cause that's the best hope I have of getting into one.

I agree.. it should be less expensive and have less power. Still a great car.. I wish they had the aluminum interior. The biggest fault of this car is the run flats.

I'm glad that a nice color was chosen this time around. That fire truck red BMW 330i from two years ago was just awful to look at.

The 1 Series is good I guess but I would rather get a slightly used 335i just because the 1 series looks so awkward.

$36 grand even though they went really light on the options.

That's still a lot. May as well get the convertible since this will be a toy (i.e. you need second car in your fleet).

I can bet that one of the first posts will be how they wish they got the sport package. Look how flat those seats are! They provide no lateral support what so ever!

jordan, those are awful seats. My sister test drove a 128 without the sport package and I couldn't wait to get out of that thing. The car didn't feel like a BMW until we got into one with ZSP.

I had a chance to drive a 128i for a little over 200 miles - it's a wonderful car, a great drive. I'd buy a hatch in a minute.
