GM hoping for a tax break on electric vehicles

GM is hoping for a tax break on electric vehicles, which would surely help offset the expected lofty MSRP of the 2010 Chevy Volt. If things go there way, they're hoping it might be in the range of $5000 to $7000. Since the Volt could cost in the $40K range, that would go a long way in terms of making it more palatable for consumers.

GM spokesman Greg Martin states: "GM wants to make sure new energy legislation comprehends not only current hybrid vehicles but future technology."

If anything is going to happen on this front, it will likely occur during the next presidential administration, and not before...

I thought this car was a alternative to the Toyota Prius? $40K is awfully high.

HA4, technically that is true, but when it comes to cutting edge environmentally oriented products those who must show off their piousness don't factor economics into their decision. When the Prius first came out the gas savings didn't justify the price, and it could be argued it isn't the best for the environment given its batteries, yet those things didn't stop those who just had to be conspicuously seen showing off their green creds. I imagine the Volt could be the same way. Its gas savings may not justify its price, and it may not be as environmentally beneficial as its made out to be, but that won't matter one iota to the "environmentalists" (I use the term very losely) who just care about how people view them.

Yeah, but I suspect the sort who buy the "Pious" (as South Park dubbed it) for the image wouldn't be caught dead in a domestic.

I bet they lease most of 'em.

Will consumers trust GM after their last electric car experience, though?
