Well that headline isn't exactly news, as Straightline has been posting about this on and off for some time now. However, Green Car Advisor has added their spin to the topic, which I think is worth reading.

Ford Ranger sales are up something like 200%.
The only compact truck and it disappears soon.

"Ford says [the Ecoboost] would deliver the hauling power of a V8"
Maybe a base Ford V8. Those things are thoroughly underpowered.
Americans are very stubborn. You won't see the huge decline in pickups everyone is ranting about. Sales will suffer, though.

If you need a truck you need a truck. people who just buy them because they like them will thank twice about buying one. but for people who need to haul a stupid "mini truck will not cut it.

Depends on the load. I drove a "stupid" mini truck for 10 years and I hauled huge amounts of stuff with it.
My truck was a Dodge Ram 50 (Mitsubishi)and it easily (and often) carried up to 1500 lbs of firewood, top soil and assorted other stuff.
It also hauled furniture, dirt bikes, camping gear and whatever else I had.
I towed lots of things with it including a 3000 lb trailer (towed that one right across Canada).
Sure you can find things a half tonne could do that my little truck couldn't... but not many.
One thing that my truck could do that a full size couldn't is average 24 to 28 mpg over the 200,000 miles I put on it.
I don't want to see a smaller F150, I want to see a new Ranger that is a real truck and weighs about 3000 lbs.
It could replace 80% of the full size trucks out there.
