BMW X6 is sold out—almost

If you're hot-to-trot on this new Bimmer, you'd better head over to your nearest dealer soon. All factory orders for 2008 have been spoken for—from the manufacturer to dealers—that is. That being the case, '08 X6s may be hard to come by in the not too distant future.

I know the X6 is a somewhat controversial vehicle, as the more "practical" AWD X5 can do just about anything this AWD SUV, er, sorry, AWD coupe can do...
But that's not the point; it's about styling which is what this coupe and every coupe is all about—and has always been about. Yeah, it's jacked up, but so what. It's still more practical than any conventional coupe, no matter how you slice it—and it looks great; at least I think it looks great.

Don't forget, Infiniti has done pretty darn well with their equally jacked up AWD coupe, the FX. Can you blame BMW for not wanting to get a piece of the action here?

Opfreak, there are 4-door coupes. Both Mercedes (CLS) and VW (Passat CC) offer them. BMW and Infiniti are just applying this idea to SUVs.

Did not see that one coming.

4-door coupe = marketing strategy.

Second roar's comment.

Thinking of the X6 as a sport coupe (or sedan) with added utility really changes my perspective on wanting one. Then again, I'm not sure I want it enough to pay $65K for it.

How is this more useful than a traditional coupe? Oh sure it has 4 doors but nobody over 5'6" can sit back there. It's way more topheavy than a 6-series. It's not a real coupe, it just has all the negatives of a coupe.

I can't believe these are selling.

It can go places a typical coupe can't go—something folks in Aspen, etc. can appreciate.

It can go in snow, something most coupes can't do.

It can carry more than a typical coupe,

The rear seat is far easier to access than a typical (as in 2-door) coupe.

Apparently X6 (and Infiniti FX) customers see something worthwhile here that you don't.

No thanks BMW. I have the Infiniti FX50 with a 390 hp V8, a better repair history and a much better interior on order.

The BMW is 10,000 more with the 6 cylinder.

Infiniti was the first with the sporty crossover and everyone else is playing catch up!

Nothing more then a glorified Aztec

huyracing says:

lol, if you slapped a BMW badge on an Aztec, it probably would have sold out as well. brand whore's. its the newest brand whore car on the block and people gotta have it!

I just hope to here positive things about this new x6 eespecially the reliability electronics.

As much as I like bmw and this SAC I can't take chances so I could possible be getting anything which is japanese made and japan built.

How many units does "sold out" represent?

Bob,

Everything you say the X6 can do better than a "typical coupe" is exactly what a typical SUV/CUV can do better as well. And added practicality to boot!

What is the purpose of this thing over an X5? I think the only thing the buyers of the X6's are seeing differently is the styling. Period.

X6 = Marketing Gimmick

Which is exactly what I said in my blog. Coupes are first and foremost about "styling." Everything else is secondary to that.

The X6 offers some utility; no, not as much of as the X5, but certainly more utility than any BMW car coupe.

And again I say customers seem to agree, as they're buying them. The FX which started this market niche, has been a huge success for Infiniti. Can you blame BMW for not wanting a piece of the action?

I guess we'll reach a conclusion once we see how many X6's are sitting on used lots in two years ;-)

Saw one on the road and it just looks strange. Maybe I'll get used to it, but I won't call it pretty.
