3.7 Subaru Legacy STI rumors

New rumors of a next-generation Subaru Legacy STI have surfaced, but this time with a 3.7L engine putting out around 450 horsepower.

This is the second time I've seen "3.7" mentioned. Subaru does make a 3.6 H6, so I'm not sure if this is a typo that was picked up by both parties—or if there really is a 3.7 H6. Adding to the speculation, there have also been rumors of an all-new H4, either being 2.4L or 2.5L, or somewhere in between...
Now if it's "somewhere in between," adding two more cylinders could well make it a 3.7 H6.

Also on the Subaru engine front is another rumor that the current 3.0 H6 will be dropped, and that the 3.6/3.7 will replace it. On one hand this makes sense, as other competitors all offer V6 engines in the 3.5 – 3.7 range. On the other hand, I would like to see the smaller 3.0 continue, but be offered in both the Impreza and Forester as premium trim level models.

More Subaru news
The latest news on the new Subaru WRC2008 rally racer is as follows: The car features a longer 2,635mm wheelbase with shorter front and rear overhangs than the previous model, and in line with its hatchback design the rear wing is fitted to the tailgate. Power comes from the familiar turbocharged 2.0L horizontally opposed four-cylinder boxer engine and peaks at 224kW (300hp). Torque from the turbo mill is abundant at 650Nm.

The transmission is a six-speed sequential electro-hydraulic unit, and the center differential gets electro-hydraulic control as well for on-the-fly adjustments to drive bias for the tough traction requirements of professional rally racing. Front and rear MacPherson strut suspension provides durability and solid handling.

AP Racing brakes measuring 310mm for off-road courses and 378mm for tarmac use are clamped by six-pot calipers for plenty of stopping power. Wheels are BBS brand, with 18-inch rims specified for tarmac races and smaller 15-inch rims for gravel races that require taller tires.

The car’s weight is capped at the 1,230kg (2,706lb) minimum per WRC rules.

As an owner of a Legacy GT Wagon it's hard to think that the current 2.5 turbo gives up much to the competition in terms of performance. I've left toll booths next to any number of mid size cars with 3.5+L V6s and never felt short on power. That said, if the Legacy were to grow in size to remain competitive in this segment, the extra displacement may be necessary.

Sounds cool but it may be overkill in a world of $135 oil barrels.
