Hitchsafe: Brilliant idea, or goofy idea?

Bet you didn't see this coming... That is converting your vehicle's trailer hitch into a micro safe, in which you can store the family jewels. Now in my case, the family jewels might not even fill that hitch safe up; but what about for a spare car key or credit card?

Do you think it's worth the $80 asking price?

It let's the thieves know right where your car keys are.

Aren't hitches usually bolted on rather than welded? 60 seconds with an impact wrench and the whole kit is gone.

I think this was mentioned on Autoblog sometime last year. EDIT: I think I'm wrong. Bob, did you have an entry on Straightline last year about this?

My take: bad idea

Someone on Autoblog commented with a Spaceballs quote. Imagine if someone sets the combination of this to 1-2-3-4. =Þ

Maybe if it wasn't so stinking obvious that it was a safe. If you could cover it with something else, then it may be worthwhile to hide a key in there in case you lock yourself out in the wilderness. I just can't see anybody putting anything really valuable in there.

It won't even work.

My hitch receiver was open on both sides.

I think it's a good idea. I'd only store a spare key, though.

I can't tell how it works, but if the pins stick out through the hitch fastener holes, it wouldn't take much to squeeze them back and slide the tray out.

Also, what would be the point of stealing the entire hitch assembly? Are you going to run home, jig it open, then run back to steal the truck? I don't think so.

good idea for your keys if it wasn't so obviously a safe! disguised, it would be clever.
As it is, it would take nothing for someone to line up THEIR hitch and hit it to smash it open- or a sledge hammer- very simple.

If you put a fake rubber cover on, like other hitch covers, that will hide the lock.

I dont think this is a good idea at all. If I'm a car thief now I know where people might be storing their stuff. The best place to store things is in a place no one knows about.

Tape the key to the top inside of the hitch itself. Done. You can thank me later.

Let me have one of these things, a ball peen hammer, a screwdriver and 5 minutes and I'll let you know.

Make that a chisel.

I have had one of these for the last couple years and it works great when doing out door activities. A lot of people have commented that someone would know that the keys are hidden there. The missing information is that there is a cover that hides the vault! No one knows what is in your hitch, or that there is a vault there.

I had also given one to my parents because their small dogs seem to lock them out of the car every once and awhile. They no longer have to try and get the dogs to unlock the door! Their spare key is always in the HitchSafe!

I love my HitchSafe and recommend it to everyone!
Brilliant idea!
