CARNIVAL OF CARS: A Drive Around the Auto Blog Block for Saturday, April 26, 2008

They're popping champagne corks in Dearborn this week for the first time in a long while, thanks to news the Blue Oval bunch turned a $100 million profit for the first quarter of 08. Maybe the fly-boy Mulally knows what he is doing, after all.
And in even better news, NASDAQ officials are preparing the old heave ho for Nestor Traffic Systems. Never heard of Nestor? They're a leading speed camera maker, so if you've recently received a ticket in the mail, odds are good Nestor had something to do with it. Seems despite selling the infernal devices to a growing number of jurisdictions, Nestor spent so much on lobbying and consultants that it's stock price has plummeted to less than a quarter each.

All I can say is Woo-Hoo!

They're woo-hooing at GM, too, thanks to the success of the redesigned Chevy Malibu. Curiously, this item popped into view at the Blue Oval web site. Can you guess what is the most frequently seen trade-in for the new Malibus? Can you speak Japanese?

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Carnival of Cars blog news roundup.

You've seen VW's new "Das Auto" spots? Yes, that one, where Heidi Klum is charmed by the cute little Bug. Or Bobby Knight re-enacts his anger issue. Peter DeLorenzo at AUTOEXTREMIST wonders what exactly the spots are selling.

Have you noticed fewer car dealer ads in your local newspaper lately? Have you even noticed your local newspaper lately? Larua Burkholder at Roadfly.com explains where the car ads have gone and why.

All I can say to the folks at Auto Motto about the Hippotamobile is .... no, no, please, no.

They call it the Jalopy Journal but don't miss the neat shot of the early 60s Formula Junior being "trailered" by the oddest El Camino you'll ever see.

Hey, it's cool and all to, like, take a Chevy small-block and drop it in unexpected places, say, a Boss Hoss three-wheeler. I dig engine-swapping, ok.  But a Toyota Supra six in a 71 Pontiac LeMans?  If you won't believe me, maybe Rob Enauidi at CarDomain.com can persuade you it's for real.

Over at FastMachines.com, Douglas Brown wants to be the last racing journo to congratulate Danica on GETTING HER FIRST INDY CAR WIN. And he's got some disturbing stats on how the open-wheel guys are doing in the door-slammer league.

And finally, Dorri at If It's Got an Engine ... has about had it with all the hard-hearted criticism of Exxon in the wake of news it made a tidy little profit last year of $39.7 billion. You don't like it, try going out and starting your own oil company, says Dorri.

See ya next week!

Ford has been popping the corks every Xmas as they give themselves gigantic bonuses.

I'm so happy to hear Nestor is failing. See where lobbying gets you?

I wonder how Camry sales are doing given all the new competitors it has.

I think the Hippotamobile is pretty accurate. Toyotas are so blobby.

I bet that LeMans goes like stink. I've seen 1200+hp out of those 2JZs.

I would LOVE to start up my own oil company. The problem is you've got to have billions of dollars to start out.

Hippotamobile? Oy.... But if the owner loves it that's what matters.

Perhaps the VW spots are selling
"Attitude" , as does most entertainment these days (Rap influences ??). Trouble is, you can't _drive_ attitude.

Concerning the Hippopotomobile: that is further proof that some people just shouldn't be allowed to have ideas.
