Down the Road: 2012 Ford F-150

Future-gazing is always fun. PickupTruck.com is doing just that with their latest story on what the 2012 F-150 might look like, and this with the help of automotive illustrator Mark Stehrenberger.

Expect to see some all-new powertrains: a twin turbo 3.7-liter V6 EcoBoost gasoline direct injection (GDI) motor, a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated "BOSS" V8, and a 4.4-liter V8 diesel. Actually these new engines should arrive by 2010, with possibly a twin-turbo version of the BOSS engine arriving by 2011...
Unlike the refreshed 2009 F-150, this will be an all-new vehicle. Ford will also try to make this vehicular brick more aerodynamic; and yet keep the big, bold look that F-150 customers love—surely a challenge if ever there was one. One aero-oriented item that caught my attention is the mention of an automatic retractable tonneau cover for the pickup bed. This is something I've long wanted to see offered from truck makers. Yeah, I know there are aftermarket versions, but as with most aftermarket items, they look, well... aftermarket. Surely the factory can do a better job as as this feature will be designed specifically for the vehicle, and therefore be properly integrated both visually and functionally.

Also, judging by this illustration, this appears to perhaps be not the F-150, but perhaps Ford's answer to the Chevy Avalanche, as the bed and body appear to be of one piece. Now that Ford has the long-wheelbase Expedition, this is certainly possible—and my gut says that Ford must be thinking along those lines as a new market entry.

It's an attractive rendering , but the same urban themed gun slit window/solid rubber rim fashion statement embraced by current auto designers (and euros like Audi). Will Fords' final design do Audis' theme better? How it works as a __truck__ (Something that deals with bad roads? Hauls a lot of stuff? )is another thing altogether.

I'd be really surprised if the final product looks anything like the rendering.

Looks good to me, though it seems like a sketch of the concept, not the production car.

EcoBoost seems promising - and it will supposedly run on regular octane gas.

Wonder if they'll resolve their disputes with Navistar by then for the diesels?

I hope it'll really be an innovation of Ford-150. For now, I'm fine with my Ford pick-up. I'm even upgrading my pick-up and put some add-ons like Ford tailgate on it. Add-ons appeal to be more classy than simplier ones.
