2008 New York Auto Show: Mitsubishi i MIEV, i MIEV Sport and Concept-cX

Mitsubishi showed off its line of extra-green subcompacts: the i MIEV (say "eye-meev") electric, the i MIEV Sport concept and the Concept-cX clean diesel.

Mitsubishi promises a production i MIEV, which is based on Mitsubishi's existing Kei-class car in Japan, but it probably won't appear in the U.S. It's being tested in a small commercial fleet right now and should be widely available for 2010. The standard Mitsubishi i has gained popularity thanks to its unusually spacious interior, achieved by moving the engine to the rear of the car and pushing the occupant compartment forward...

Mitsubishi also notes that this rear-engine layout helped speed the adaptation of the i for electric use, as the new motor and its battery pack conveniently fit under the rear compartment.

Mitsubishi Concept-cX

Though further from production than the i MIEV, the Concept-cX is more likely to translate into something bound for the U.S. In its current form, it seems to be a boxier interpretation of the Suzuki SX4, a vehicle meant to provide on-road confidence in messy weather rather than off-road mobility. This concept is powered by a clean-burning 134-hp 1.8-liter diesel. Though the design isn't ready for production, there's room in Mitsubishi's lineup for a small cute-ute below the Outlander.

Mitsubishi i MIEV Sport

Least likely of the three to make any movement toward production in the U.S. -- or anywhere else -- is the i MIEV Sport concept. Unlike the standard i MIEV, the Sport does not share its design with an existing car. Instead it looks like the type of concept car too familiar to auto show loyalists, as it is eye-catching but unlikely to be seen anywhere but on a rotating stage. Mitsubishi says this shape "projects its greater performance bias," but it really serves as a dramatic contrast to the i MIEV prototypes to which Mitsubishi seems to be devoting more of its electric-car resources.

But in addition to its three green cars, Mitsubishi also used its press conference at the 2008 New York Auto Show to indicate a move toward flex-fuel engines. Though its green factor pales in comparison to other alternatives, a flex-fuel engine is the most likely to actually make its way into a U.S.-specification Mitsubishi sometime in the foreseeable future. -- Brady Holt, Student Journalist

I thought that last item was a VW concept of a Super Beetle. Given how stagnant the Beetle has been, I figured it was.

and the imiev sport is a cheap knock-off the new beetle by volkswagen...

i love the new beetle an i hope volkswagen doesn't lose interest in it!

marketing in europe sucks big time, that's why sales figures are so bad there... also not all motor/transmissions are available in europe, for example the new beetle convertible can't be ordered with the 1.8T auto tranny, and the convertible diesel also isn't available with the auto tranny nor the DSG, only manual tranny... no wonder it sells badly... a torqui engine deserves a good automatic transmission. i wouldn't buy a diesel without an automatic transmission! period

and the gasoline engines in the new beetle are not available with the DSG!!! the best argument to buy a VW these days isn't available in the new beetle!!! shame on VW management!!!

Concept cX makes sense given the new Outlander has grown (it even offers 3 rows). It could occupy the slot the old Outlander used to fill.
